ABRAHAM LINCOLN MAP - Kieran McAuliffe - 11-05-2014 11:15 AM

I would like to inform members of the Lincoln Discussion Symposium that my new Abraham Lincoln map is now available on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Abraham-Lincoln-Map-Kieran-McAuliffe/dp/0986894508/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1415197722&sr=1-1

This is really a book on a map, showing Lincoln's life from his birth in Kentucky to his train journey to Washington as President-elect. I cover his childhood and youth, his life in New Salem, his participation in the Black Hawk War, his life in Springfield, his law career including the Eighth Judicial Circuit, his political life from State legislator to U.S. Congressman, to his battle with Stephen Douglas for the U.S. Senate, and his victory as President in 1860. Includes a thorough chronology of Lincoln's life, three inset maps, dozens of photos and a bibliography/reading list.

This map took years to produce and I would like to thank my wife Lynn who is a superb editor and proofreader and who kept me focused and out of trouble!

As I said in another thread I would be using this in the classroom if I were still teaching. Kieran's maps are wonderful. Kieran's history maps website is here.

We just received our first shipment of this map for our gift shop. It is terrific. The amount of information is comparable to a small book!

$10.50 ppd in our shop.

I received it yesterday - it's absolutely terrific! There seems everything in it in the most visualizing way! Just great, Kieran! May I ask - I can't remember I've ever seen a photo of Mrs. Sprigg's boarding house - when was it taken?

Good Morning!
The picture of Mrs. Sprigg’s boarding house was taken a few years after the Civil War.
When I was in Washington last month I found a book in a used book store. It is titled “A. Lincoln: The Crucible of Congress” by Paul Findley. Published in 1979, this is a very interesting book about Lincoln the Congressman. It has many pictures in it that I have never seen before. Included is one of Mrs. Spriggg’s boarding house, taken from the same spot as the one I used. But it is a different picture. In this book the credit for the picture reads “Architect of the Capitol”. The one I used has a sign on the front of one of the row houses that reads ARCHITECT. The picture in the book has no sign (there are other differences).
This makes me wonder how many pictures are hidden away in various offices. I never thought of the Architect of the Capitol for reference material.
Thank you for your praise of my map! The next one is Lincoln’s Washington.

I found this Library of Congress photo of Mrs. Sprigg's boarding house. I think it's the same as the one on Kieran's outstanding map. I tried to find a photo of Mrs. Sprigg but drew a blank.

Kieran, thanks to you and your wife Lynn for this wonderful resource.
I'm a fan of maps and what could be better than a Lincoln map! Love the way the facts and visuals come together...1+1=3.

Roger, I found a lot of info on Mrs. Sprigg including where she and her family are buried. Here's a good site.

She was well known in Washington for her Congressional boarders and her abolitionist support. BUT no photo! It must be out there somewhere.

Hi Anita. Thanks for the link. As for the photo maybe we need to look in the same place that has the photos of John Lloyd and John F. Parker.

Great idea Roger. Maybe they're bundled together just waiting to be discovered!
