In Mary Harlan's defense, she was probably having to be involved with Mary Lincoln at her worst.
Mary L. was having problems, and Mary H. was unprepared on how to deal with them. Plus for a while, they are living under the same roof, and its Mary H's home not Mary Lincoln's. Mary L is probably somewhat frustrated because Robert seems to be doing well financially, and she feels financially insecure and doesn't have her own home. There maybe even some resentment back towards Mary Lincoln as Robert's wife can see the stress Mary L is placing on him and her family. Robert may feel that Mary L's eratic behavior is damaging his fathers legacy. (when in hindsight, it actually served to enhance it) Anyone who has ever done it knows, it's tough having inlaws or parents live with you, when your not expecting it, especially if there are health and mental issues. Your life is turned upside down. Even under the best of circumstances, Mary is probably not an easy person to live with.
