He seems to match most of the clues. Though, I'm not aware of a daughter who won the Caldecott Medal. I do know that Weik's granddaughter, Ann Grifalconi, was the runner-up for the Caldecott in 1987 for her book The Village of Round and Square Houses. It was published just before I started kindergarten.

You got it! It was Weik. As for the Caldecott, I misread my source for this. It came from an article written by Randall T. Shepherd in the Indiana Magazine of History. He did call it an "honor" award and didn't specify whether it was Weik's daughter or granddaughter, both of whom were described as excellent writers in their own right.
