Who was this candidate?
He ran for President despite not being a US citizen.

RE: Who was this candidate?
Can you say if the person has been previously mentioned on this forum?

RE: Who was this candidate?
Previously mentioned? Not often. Last time was 3 years ago.
Need I say that Laurie Verge mentioned this person , in 2018, in a context that was unconnected to the presidential candidature matter. The Laurie post concerned Robert Lincoln who was involved in a matter where he was opposing the views of this person. “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Who was this candidate?
Due to accommodation circumstances the presidential candidate was unable to make public appearances during the election campaign.
He was a member of the same political party as Carl Sandburg. “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Who was this candidate?
There is a story about a madstone which involved Abraham Lincoln visting this person's hometown when he , the man in question, was a child.
Googling is fine. .... if you have time. “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Who was this candidate?
Eugene V. Debs from Terre Haute.
Mrs. Murphy lived in Terre Haute, Indianna. and had a madstone that was believed could cure dog bite infections. When son Robert was bitten by a dog, Lincoln took him to see her. |

RE: Who was this candidate?
I concur with Anita, that the person is Eugene Debs. However, I have to correct an error in Mick's clues. Contrary to what some internet sites
say, like the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Library of Congress (!), Eugene Debs was never stripped of his US Citizenship because of his Sedition conviction due to his anti-war speech. |

RE: Who was this candidate?
Congratulations to you both Anita and Steve.
As for the citizenship issue .... well .... if you cannot rely on the internet what's the world coming to, I ask myself. I trust in Steve's certainty . Even though I see from one site that Debs had his citizenship rights "restored" posthumously. https://www.nytimes.com/1976/07/04/archi...enate.html also https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/ent...ne_V._Debs Maybe it was his 'rights' as a citizen that were stripped from him. I must admit that I thought it an odd action to strip citizenship from a person .... I always thought it would be something that no nation could quite literally "do". I think it would be impossible now if that nation was a signatory to United Nations treaty on Human Rights. Follow up question Anyway, I was prevented from giving another clue concerning my person having met someone in New York who later went on to have an unpleasant experience with an ice pick. Now , who do you think that was? “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Who was this candidate?
Ice pick?, I'm going to go with Trotsky
About Deb's citizenship - Congress passes a lot of stupid legislation. But he definitely was still a US citizen. Non-citizens are prohibited from running for President by Article II of the US Constitution, and Debs couldn't have run in 1920 if he was no longer a US citizen. The confusion comes from the state of Indiana barring Debs from voting after his release because his sentenced was commuted by Pres. Harding; he wasn't pardoned and a convicted felon cannot vote. Fifty years earlier, in 1926, Congress was also inundated with requests to "restore" his citizenship, but he was still a US citizen: https://books.google.com/books?id=yauyFz...22&f=false |

RE: Who was this candidate?
Thanks, Steve, for clearing that up.
And yes, you are correct it was Trotsky that met Debs. Trotsky spent a few months in New York in 1917. He met up with the ice pick in Mexico. Apparently, Stalin had taken against him and ordered elimination. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ram%C3%B3n_Mercader “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |
