RE: Lincoln- the man for every politician.
Bernie Sanders is using Abraham Lincoln as an example in his campaign regarding "Medicare for All." The comparison with Lincoln is that he (Lincoln) did something that everyone thought impossible (ending slavery)- so Sanders-if elected will see that "Medicare for All" gets done if he is elected.
Thus, we are reminded of once again the title of this thread: "Lincoln-the man for every politician." Bill Nash |

RE: Lincoln- the man for every politician.
I add this to this Thread because I think it the most suitable place.
I was surprised to find on searching for 'Mario Cuomo' that there have been only 2 mentions of him in this forum. I found this Youtube clip enlightening for Cuomo's opinion on Lincoln. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZtLuyfwg38 “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |

RE: Lincoln- the man for every politician.
Of course, a Lincoln quote was used, I understand, during the Republican National Convention. I didn’t watch it. Nor did I watch the Democratic one. But I saw the headlines afterward. It was apparently a complete misquote? This has happened many times by politicians and others of the ilk. They didn’t do their homework!

They don't do their homework. I read it was a rephrasing from the Lyceum Speech that had been circulated on the internet just as read at the Convention.
It's SO easy to look up and quote exactly, and read the context... |

Amy, you are looking at this from the wrong perspective. Politicians "improve" President Lincoln's quotations because on any particular subject matter President Lincoln did not say or write the "correct" words at the time and thereby conveyed the "wrong" message on the particular subject matter under current discussion. It's sort of a public service not appreciated by "purists", such as you (and me). "So very difficult a matter is it to trace and find out the truth of anything by history." -- Plutarch |
