Steve got it. It was the Pulitzer Prize that Sandburg won for Abraham Lincoln: The War Years. I was going through my files looking for the letter, and I have yet to find it. My first thought was that the correspondent was Stanley Kimmel, but the letter I have from him, while mentioning the Prize, doesn't have the quote. Sadly, my memory ain't what she used to be, honest or otherwise.
Mike, my reference to shadow was my attempt to confuse people by letting everyone think it could be a person or a thing.
My next clue was going to be while most people only had one, Sandburg had three. The first was in 1919 for Cornhuskers while the second was The War Years. The third was The Complete Poems of Carl Sandburg.
By the way Roger, how many posts do I have to make before I'm considered a Hero member?

Still not much going on (writing seems like such a distant dream), so here's another question.
In 1964, a visitor appeared at Carl Sandburg's North Carolina home. While initially polite, Sandburg soon grew tired of talking to this person, saying he had to get back to work. The visitor left, rather disappointed that meeting his idol wasn't as successful as he hoped.
Who was the visitor?

Man, I'm making these too easy. It was Bob Dylan. I found the story in the newsletter of the Sandburg State Historic Site in Galesburg, but it came from Rolling Stone. Here is a link to the article. Good job, Steve!
