Hi Eva. My favorite is a book titled Lincoln's Mothers by Dorothy Clarke Wilson. The first 200 pages deal with Nancy Hanks Lincoln (and of course Thomas is mentioned frequently), and the last 200 pages deal with Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln (and, of course, frequent mention of Thomas). The book is historical fiction, but very well-researched IMO.

Amazon says of this book:

"A great deal has been written about Abraham Lincoln but little about the two women who were the greatest influences in his life: his mother Nancy and his stepmother Sally. Their story is one of survival on the early American frontier, and of the unique love they held for their family, especially son Abraham."

Gene, thanks, the problem is either the used books aren't shipped to Germany at all, or for 20$+ shipping fee. But I've never come across a 0.01$ book shipped overseas at all.

I ordered my copy of "Lincoln's Mothers" for $.01 on Amazon. Gene you sure know how to find bargains! I agree that Lincoln's three parents collectively were most influential on his character development. It's important that you added his father. Thomas Lincoln had strengths for sure but IMO it was his father's character flaws that made Lincoln determined not to make them his own.

Dennis Hanks, who was about 19 years old at the time, was also with Abraham, age 9, and Sara, age 11. There were also neighbors who probably were aware of the situation who could check in on them from time to time. A tough time for sure, but the three of them were probably pretty capable and their material needs were few.

Well, Dennis Hanks was a nice guy but apparently not a very capable hunter. So, if there were neighbors, how can we explain Sarah Bush Johnson's appallment at the state of the children when she first came in with her own children and new husband Thomas? She told the children were ragged and dirty. Wonder why neighbors didn't gave them some care.
