Thanks Joe. That's just part of the collection. I have another six or so bookcases full of Civil War books plus far too many other kinds throughout the house (did I just say that?).

Droopy can get herself into some strange contortions.

There's nothing like the smell of an old book. A certian earthyness, a sense of must and dust. It's part of the fun of going into an old used book store. It must be an acquired taste, my kids haven't grown to appreciate it yet.

About the smell of old books - I heartily agree, Gene! I LOVE the smell and particularly the feel of old leather bound volumes - and I have a great many.... it, too is the first thing I notice in an old bookstore - love, love it!

As a matter of fact, when I buy any old books they go right straight into the freezer at first! Now - before you think I've gone completely bonkers, it's an old trick that I was taught by a friend who worked for years at the Library of Congress. Putting old books into the freezer wrapped in saran wrap overnight or for a day or so kills any silverfish or bookworms which may exist in the old paper! And yes, it works!

Oh, me too! I've always wondered if it comes from memories of my old school library, which was just a musty little room in a corner of the basement, filled with musty old books. One day a week mothers volunteered as librarians, and I believe mine was the first. The beginning of my love affair ...

In our family, we all love to give (and receive) old books as gifts. Not valuable ones, like Betty's leather bound ones, but ones we find at thrift shops, and flea markets, and library book sales. Even my two four-year-old grandsons have gotten the bug. They have their own growing library of classic (and not quite yet) childrens' literature, because Grammy can afford to spoil them thanks to Amazon marketplace and library discards. I think books are already one of their favorite things in the world too!

Bill, it's not mine, although the closet in our den is close. My wife always wants that door kept closed. When Gene mentioned "the smell" (which I love also) I went searching the Internet for a photo that reminded me of "the smell." And I came up with the photo above.
