Sept 17, 2016 Heritage Auction – Lincoln Assassination Related Items Up For Auction
Totally excited about this upcoming auction. This is a joint auction by Heritage Auctions and The Rail Splitter: http://historical.ha.com/c/search-result...ver-071515 - check back often since they are still adding more items.
One interesting piece up for auction is a door knob from the boarding house operated by Mary Surratt. It measures 2.25" across and has some good heft to it. A two-sided Denison paper tag describes it and states: "The building was being remodelled to make a Chinese restaurant and Bert Sheldon of the Metropolitan Police secured a few of these knobs." I have attached the photo but you can also view it online: http://historical.ha.com/itm/political/-...ail-071515 Many years ago The Rail Splitter used to have their own online auctions. Back in 2009, I participated in their bicentennial auction and won a few Edwin Booth playbills. I have also purchased rare items directly from Jonathan Mann including some JWB cdvs. Here’s the link to the 2009 auction: http://railsplitter.com/sale13/auction13.html |

Fascinating! I remember Bert Sheldon - he was a very affable and knowledgeable guy and I have some old cassette recordings (courtesy of the late John Brennan and Art Loux), which I've now converted over to digital to listen to on my iPod. They are recordings of talks that Bert gave to various historical societies (including early Surratt Society) back in the late 1970s to 1980s.....
