RE: A Sandburg Stumper
Sorry Joe. This group is not political (at least not in the classical sense).

RE: A Sandburg Stumper
You are correct Bill!
From the New Yorker article: Charles Francis Adams' dislike of the new, if not his vanishing taste for the old, was typical of the early Academy. Carl Sandburg, for instance, made the Institute in 1933 (and the Academy in 1940), but his election took place in the face of strenuous opposition from the Old Guard, led by Secretary [Robert Underwood] Johnson, whom Father Time was beginning to take care of. (Johnson died in 1937.) "As for the Institute dinner, the election of Carl Sandburg ought to have been recorded in the Goncourt Journal," Van Wyck Brooks wrote to Lewis Mumford in 1933. "You should have heard poor old Mr. Johnson rising to read aloud a poem of Sandburg's on shaving in a Pullman car, to show that the election of such a man would represent the ruin of the ancient faith. It was a great scene." Good job Bill. You win a membership in the Academy, provided you can get Sandburg to vote you in. RE: A Sandburg Stumper
There are three possible answers to this question. To be correct, all three must be given.
What did Carl Sandburg never get. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell
I want the respect of intelligent men, but I will choose for myself the intelligent. --Carl Sandburg

1) to see the first moon landing.
2) to see a President resign from office. 3) to see the end of the Vietnam War. Rob: the question is too hard! Bill Nash |

RE: A Sandburg Stumper
Actually Bill, in 1959, Sandburg was awarded a Grammy Award for "Best spoken performance - documentary" for his 1958 narration of Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait performed byAndré Kostelanetz and the New York Philharmonic.

RE: A Sandburg Stumper
Sorry Bill.
First clue: In the order I'm thinking of these the following apply 1. 85.2 percent of Americans get this 2. 22 percent of Americans get this 3. Only one person in the world at one time gets this. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell

Sorry Laurie.
Clue #2. The first two he would have received in Galesburg. The third, I'm not saying as it would give it away. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell
