Rick, I cannot imagine you in any other clothing - you represent my idea of the perfect gentleman of the old school!

Another great conference. As always great speakers, great company.

RE: 2016 Conference - Miss_Bellatrix - 04-11-2016 10:37 AM

Is the conference around the same time next year? I know dates probably have not been set yet but I'm considering going. I'd like to tie it into a week long trip to DC.

CONGRATULATIONS to Laurie Verge and all the staff and members of the Surratt Society on a fabulous 2016 Conference. The great line-up of speakers -- Kathy Canavan, John Elliott, John Fazio, Susan Higginbotham, Paige Palmer, and Kate Ramirez -- were an excellent combination of inspirational (very well done, Paige!), informative, educational, and provocative. What more could you want? Rick Smith led a fun tour of Surratt House on Friday evening. The excursions led by Bob Allen and the incomparable Laurie Verge were not to be missed. (I do not know if there are extra copies for sale, but if you were not able to go, the booklet prepared for the tours, Down the Backroads of Civil War Maryland is the next best thing.) Congratulations to all who contributed their efforts to make this such a wonderful event! Well done!!

Right now, I'm hoping for the first weekend in April - if I can beat the brides to that date. Our conference center is a prime bridal reception spot also, and you have to be quick to beat bridezillas to those venues!

The second and third weekends of April are Palm Sunday and Easter, so if we can't get the first weekend, we'll have to push it back into March.

Bill, thank you so much. By the sound of your words, it appears I accomplished the goal I set for myself, which was to use my speech not only to tell my story, but also to provoke and inspire my audience. I sincerely hope we will see each other at next year's conference and have more time to chat.

Paige -

Anyone not inspired by your presentation was not listening. That young people such as you care, makes everything that all of us involved and dedicated to the study of history worthwhile. You totally get it, so all the gratitude goes to you. My focus is Edwin Stanton in the aftermath of Lincoln's assassination. If I can help in your research and investigation, please do not hesitate to ask. You go, girl!!!

Bill

Laurie,

Next year, 2017, is the second time this century that weekend dates of Easter match the 1865 weekend dates of Easter and, of course, the dates associated with the Lincoln assassination. The other was 2006.

The Census Bureau et al. report that 1876 was the only other occurrence of that specific sequence of dates in the 19th century. There were four such in the 20th century: 1911, 1922, 1933, and 1995.

The Easter sequence associated with April 16 sometimes runs on an eleven-year cycle, but not always.

Just thought I’d add a bit of trivia.

Bob

I also had a wonderful time! Thank you for another great year. The presentations were wonderful but the best part is all the great conversations and connections. Can't wait for next year!
