My mouth tells me that I would do well to avoid either the Crusty Cur or the Cozy Dog, but thanks. The site that I quoted is run by the Lehrman Institute, so I would still like to question whether the saying originated with Herndon or did he copy from Seward? Or, did David Donald misquote the source? For some reason, I cannot copy and paste that particular paragraph onto this forum. RE: Who Said This? - Gene C - 05-29-2015 01:31 PM The footnote for the quote in "Lincoln's Herndon" is - Herndon to Lyman Trumbull, January 27, 1861, Trumbull MSS. (not sure what MSS stands for) RE: Who Said This? - L Verge - 05-29-2015 01:37 PM I concede defeat. I did some checking, and two other sources (mrlincolnandfriends and abrahamlincolnclassroom) give Herndon as the source. My apologies for steering anyone wrong. MSS used to mean "manuscript" and indicate that it was not a published book. Not sure if it still means that in this day and age. RE: Who Said This? - loetar44 - 05-29-2015 01:45 PM It's always great to win ! Let's have a party! Thanks Gene for the Cozy Dog ! But you gave the answer away by saying "this person is probably best known for his association with Lincoln before he became president." RE: Who Said This? - RJNorton - 05-29-2015 02:51 PM A friend of Lincoln's gave the following description as Lincoln traveled to visit his stepmother for the final time early in 1861. Who said (wrote) this? "The nation at large would have been extremely surprised to behold their President-elect at this time. He had on a faded hat, innocent of a nap; and his coat was extremely short, more like a sailor’s pea-jacket than any other describable garment...A well-worn carpet-bag, quite collapsed, comprised his baggage." RE: Who Said This? - L Verge - 05-29-2015 03:00 PM I cheated again... The answer I found was Henry C. Whitney who wrote a book on riding the circuit with Mr. Lincoln RE: Who Said This? - RJNorton - 05-29-2015 03:22 PM Right, Laurie! Very good! You win another Crusty Cur from the Cozy Dog. But you gave the answer away by saying "this person is probably best known for his association with Lincoln before he became president."Unfortunately I missed this question, I would neither have needed the hint nor cheating for this one...bye bye doggie... The quote reminds me of something A. Lincoln once said, so my question is not "who", but "whom" - whom considered he to lie and later re-lie? (And I guess it won't challenge you although I tried to make it cheating-resistant.) RE: Who Said This? - RJNorton - 05-30-2015 03:56 AM Edwin Stanton? RE: Who Said This? - Eva Elisabeth - 05-30-2015 05:03 AM Good guess, Roger, but he didn't say this about Stanton. Hint #1: He said this about more than one. RE: Who Said This? - Eva Elisabeth - 05-30-2015 06:07 AM I am sorry I just saw the autocorrection didn't put up with "re-ly" (I've corrected it now in the other post) which might have confused you. Please notice it's about to "lie and re-lie". RE: Who Said This? - Thomas Kearney - 05-30-2015 07:52 AM (05-29-2015 03:22 PM)RJNorton Wrote: Right, Laurie! Very good! The best menu item ever at the Cozy Dog. I went when I was 10, but if I attend school in Springfield I might make a Super Size Me type challenge out of the Cozy Dog. Carpenter called the newspaper reports " unreliable," and Mr. Lincoln added: "That is to say, Mrs. Welles, that they lie and then they re-lie!". Roger, thanks for guessing, you win another Cozy Dog dish. RE: Who Said This? - RJNorton - 05-30-2015 08:17 AM Thank you, Eva. I hope it looks like this: RE: Who Said This? - Eva Elisabeth - 05-30-2015 02:25 PM Please forgive my ignorance, what are the items on the right? |
