Great and generous gift for your grandson's bithday. Old Ebbitt's had so many relocations it's amazing it still exists. Next time I'm in DC I will dine there. How's the food? I have not been there in years. They do so many road construction projects in DC now that I'm afraid I'll get lost - this from someone who used to go downtown at least once a month. However, I just called the family, and they said the food was excellent. The Grill is known for their crab cakes, so the guys got those and loved them. My daughter is into eating healthy and trying new things and enjoyed a hummus platter with pita bread and vegetable dips (sounds like an appetizer to me!). They did laugh about their appetizers. They were there early and there was a half-price offer on all appetizers. Our family loves shrimp in any shape and form, so they each ordered the shrimp cocktail. It consisted of one huge shrimp (probably a prawn) with a dab of cocktail sauce. The prices are fairly standard for DC fare, but not overly priced. RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - L Verge - 06-18-2017 08:38 PM While we're on the subject of food in our nation's capital, here's an article on some of the famous eateries in the city's past. Many of these served Presidents and First Ladies. Even Lady Bird Johnson and her daughters used to sit at the counter at one (now closed) and order from the menu. It was called Reeves's Bakery, but also served breakfast and lunch items. It was practically world-famous for its strawberry pies. J. Edgar Hoover ordered a ham sandwich from there almost every day. http://www.streetsofwashington.com/2014/06/how-sweet-it-was-washingtons-great.html RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - Eva Elisabeth - 06-18-2017 09:50 PM There's still the business where JFK proposed to Jackie: http://www.martinstavern.com/ RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - L Verge - 06-19-2017 02:13 PM (06-18-2017 09:50 PM)Eva Elisabeth Wrote: There's still the business where JFK proposed to Jackie: Agreed, and please read the history of the Martin family and its role in Georgetown. I also noted that soft shell crabs are in season and served there. Now I have to con someone into taking me there for a soft shell crab sandwich! I much prefer soft shells to hard shells. One can starve to death trying to pick enough meat out of hard shells to sustain hunger. My motto during soft shell season is to order a soft shell sandwich first to fill you up and then have fun dilly-dallying over the hard shells and beer! RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - RJNorton - 07-03-2017 02:03 PM Which First Lady said this (when asked about the future)? "I don't have any idea what's going to happen. It's a constant surprise what I do and what happens to me." RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - Eva Elisabeth - 07-03-2017 03:35 PM I'd guess one of the younger ones. So the first who comes to my mind - Jackie? RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - RJNorton - 07-03-2017 04:16 PM I understand your thinking, Eva, but it was not Jackie who said this. RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - J. Beckert - 07-03-2017 04:46 PM That made me think of Bess Truman. Possibly contemplating life after the White House? RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - L Verge - 07-03-2017 06:00 PM I'll guess Pat Nixon who never seemed to say her soul was her own. RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - Gene C - 07-03-2017 08:01 PM Hillary Clinton didn't say it, but it was in one of her emails. RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - Anita - 07-03-2017 08:18 PM Melania Trump is my guess. RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - RJNorton - 07-04-2017 04:28 AM Thanks to all who tried, but Gene got the right First Lady (although not in the manner he described; she DID say it). Back on October 10, 1997, Hillary Clinton held a press conference. She was about to turn 50, and she was asked about her future. And she responded with the quote in the question. RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - L Verge - 07-06-2017 03:31 PM Let's try this one: Which President was known for drinking hard cider for breakfast? RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia - Rogerm - 07-06-2017 04:35 PM Would it have been Andrew Jackson? |
