Mary and her in-laws
I was just speaking with a friend about Mary and her in-laws, Thomas and Sarah Lincoln. What is the basis for stating that Mary never met them? Most people use Mary's letter to Sarah Lincoln as proof - but no where in the letter does Mary indicate that they have (or have not) met.
I also checked some of the interviews in HERNDON'S INFORMANTS and found nothing that states they never met. So, did they met? Did Thomas ever come to Springfield to met with Abraham during the early years of the 1840's? Who brought Harriet Hanks (later Chapman) to the Lincoln's home? She would have need an escort to Springfield and home again. I have read in several books that Mary never met Thomas or Sarah, but I have never found any documentation that proves the claim. |
