Surratt House Docents
Many thanks to Rick Smith for sending this photo. It's Rick (left) with Bill Binzel who are both volunteers at Surratt House. The photo was taken on the porch. You look wonderful, gentlemen!

Excellent costumes. I'm hoping to volunteer at the Surratt House. Laurie, do you accept guys who are lookalikes of this guy:

You could say Lewis Payne and I were separated at birth.

I think Rick is pushing 18 years of devoted, selfless, on-his-own-dime volunteer service to Surratt House. Nice job, son. I'd bet they wish they had more like you. And best of luck to you, Bill.

It is it just me, or does anyone else think these two are each reaching for a gun as a Yankee is approaching?

No, Blaine, it ain't just you; we are just practicing to stay in proper trim in case a Yankee does decide to show up.

Joe Beckert once described Surratt's to Laurie as a Rebel safehouse, maildrop, and a place for Rebs to meet, have a drink and badmouth the Yankees, and then asked, "But what was it like in 1865?"

Son, you said a mouthful.

And remember, what we done, we done for Dixie.

Blaine, as a part of Rick's good natured response, he sent "A gallery of Rebs waiting at Surratts for Yankees to show up."

RE: Surratt House Docents
With my apologies to my very good friends shown in these photos, but the Old West had its Younger Gang -- Ma Surratt has the Older Gang working for her Dave Taylor is at least close to 30, so that's a downhill slide for him.

We have 7 other wonderful gentlemen who serve each month as guides, some even longer than Rick. They bring so much knowledge to the visitors and do it in their own style. We love each and every one of them. Our ladies are just as wonderful too. I am pleased to have had them all in my life and occupation (well, with maybe a few exceptions over the years...).

Laurie, how do I register to become a volunteer. I have been looking for clothing similar to what Lewis Powell wore in his photo shoot with Gardner.

there are a couple JWB look alikes in Surratsville. A Payne look alike would be nice. Look at the similarities between me and my "twin":

Anyone notice any similarities between the 2?

RE: Surratt House Docents
Thomas - first you are going to have to get a longer comb-over...

Next, save your Lincoln pennies because appropriate garb does not come cheaply, and our guidelines are very explicit as to what is correct and what is not.

There is at least a three-month training session on the history of the Surratts, the assassination, the antique furnishings, etc. before you attempt to solo. And, you will be evaluated by more than one person to see if you are ready to stand on your own. You may have a good background in this subject, but I dare say you still have a lot to learn. We will also teach you the proper way to conduct a tour and appropriate behavior on tours. Personality and professionalism is 75% of the tour. You are not "the star," you are "the educator" when conducting a tour at Surratt House - and you need to understand how to meet the wishes of your visitors, condense the information into a 50-minute format, and leave the folks wanting to learn more.

If you still plan on going out-of-state for college this fall, forget being a guide here. We expect and require a commitment of at least one, full, four-hour shift per month (love those who do more) and hopefully for a minimum of three years. It is not a job where you show up when there is nothing else better to do for the day. Your college plans hold up a big STOP sign right away.
