Yes, they pretend to be female dances, and do this perfectly. They don't intend to cheat the audience, but to parody the conventions and clichés of romantic and classical ballet. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (all-male drag ballet corps) was founded in New York City in 1974.

Roger, Mary would have been my next hint - the rose may* have witnessed her, but not in Europe.
(*Please notice that while it is believed the rose dates back to those days there is no absolute proof!)

Hint #2: I think it was also a smart idea of Gene's to find out the state.
