P.S. - This is an inside joke that only Roger, Betty, and Laurie will understand.

RE: Happy Mother's Day
I refuse to divulge what the ax handle reference means; suffice to say that it is not related to Mr. Lincoln.

For all viewers: You probably won't see this on the major news networks, but there were some mad Maryland mothers this Mother's Day. In most years, Mother's Day is the unofficial beginning of crab season in Maryland. Generally, the weather has been warm for weeks (which means the waters flowing into the Chesapeake Bay are warmer) and Mother's Day is often celebrated in the backyard with at least a bushel of steamed crabs being devoured by family and friends.

Some families were probably rich enough (and stupid enough) to continue the tradition. However, because of the cold spring and cold waters, crabs are not very big, nor are they plentiful. This weekend, they were selling for $250 a bushel mixed and much smaller than usual.

I am not a fan of hard crabs unless someone else is doing the picking. I can't stand the feel of spices, etc. under my fingernails, plus you can starve to death picking out that meat. I prefer soft shells (some people call them peelers). I guess it will take a little longer for them to come into season also. No oysters for awhile to fall back on. Months without "r's" in them are not good oyster months.

I've always found it an odd coincidence that virtually the same quote was attributed to George Washington. (Seth C. Bruggeman, Here, George Washington Was Born: Memory, Material Culture, and the Public" U Georgia Press, 2008, p. 16.

RE: Happy Mother's Day
Very interesting, Blaine. Some books/articles, etc. I've seen insert the word "angel" before the word "mother." In other words Lincoln is talking about his "angel mother." However, in Herndon's Life of Lincoln the word "angel" does not appear in the quote. Does anyone know if there is a source for Lincoln actually saying "angel mother?"

Obviously Josiah Holland and Alfred Townsend first inserted the adjective "angel" in Josiah G. Holland: "The Life of Abraham Lincoln", p. 23, and George Alfred Townsend: "The Real Life of Abraham Lincoln", p. 6. According to Townsend, Lincoln made this remark to William Herndon.

RE: Happy Mother's Day
Many thanks, Eva, for finding the origin. Holland's biography came out about a year after Lincoln's assassination, and I know he had traveled to Springfield beforehand to speak to Herndon and other Lincoln friends. So I assume Herndon told Holland the quote somewhat differently than what Herndon told in his own book many year later. Townsend also talked to Herndon in person, so I guess Herndon told Townsend the same thing. Herndon left the word "angel" out when he wrote about the quote, so I am still wondering if that was an oversight on Herndon's part or Herndon decided to tell Holland and Townsend an embellished version.

Happy Mother's Day to all moms, way to go - and I sure hope you will be told today "all that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother," or similar!!!

This is more or less the German version:

(...plus the basic message to honor her as long as fate will allow.)

Herrlich! Who says, in the words of Frederick the Great, German is a language for soldiers and mules? BTW he spoke and wrote mostly in French. . . .
