Does it look anything like this? This is the cover of an old booklet that I have.

I think many of us have a copy of that booklet, Roger. It probably formed the basis for many of our later collections. Good memories. So many of my memories are packed away in boxes in my basement...

You all might have seen it - Ford's just sent a note that they will screen "Lincoln" on the 14th at 6pm at the National Portrait Gallery. It's free and not tickets are needed!

I love the Lincoln movie, and if I wasn't on vacation I woud wish I could join watching...

This might be a language issue by a non-native speaker, but I've always understood "anniversary" as a term for celebrating a positive, happy, joyful occasion, like a birthday, or a wedding anniversary (I am aware some might come up with objections to the latter example). Please help me to improve my English or my understanding of the subject, does the term "anniversary" nail your feelings about this date and day? Is it a sad or a happy day, and what does the term imply, or is it entirely neutral? Why not Commemoration Day or Memorial Day?

"Anniversary" is a neutral term here, used in connection with both happy and tragic events.

"Memorial Day" wouldn't work, because the name is used for a specific holiday at the end of May to commemorate those who died while serving in the armed forces.

As a native English/American speaker an anniversary simply marks the DATE in question. But I see what you are getting at. In simple terms I would say we are gathering to commemorate (some might say celebrate) the occasion of Lincoln's assassination on the anniversary date. Myself I don't see anniversary in and of itself as a negative term.

And, I certainly hope that, after 150 years, no one is "celebrating" the death of Lincoln. There will be a mourning wreath on the door at Surratt House this week from April 15 through the 19th. If an unreconstructed visitor calls me on it, I will stay true to history and swear that a Yankee cavalry detail made me put up. Lord knows Southern Maryland was crawling with Union patrols 150 years ago this month.

Laurie, I understand that there is a secret society that celebrates Lincolns death every April 15th. Seems I read that in American Brutus or Manhunt (perhaps somewhere else). Myself, I hope no one confuses my John Wilkes Booth T shirt with any endorsement of his deed. I just want the coolest T Shirt on 10th Street that day. I just hope the TSA has a sense of humor when I go through security at the airport.

Upon reconsideration, I think the reason for my "issue" of linking a joyful occasion to the term anniversary is that the English language often uses it where we would speak of a jubilee, "Jubiläum", which implies it's an occasion to jubilate. A wedding anniversary e.g. is a "Hochzeitsjubiläum" (wedding = Hochzeit), a "Firmenjubiläum" (Firma = company) celebrates the anniversary of a company's foundation, or an employee who has worked for many years will at some time celebrate his/her "Dienstjubiläum" (Dienst = service,duty).

If Eva wasn't stopped for all the Lincoln assassination books she had in her luggage on the way back to Germany a few weeks ago, you should be safe, David.
