RE: And Sometimes I Say Yes
I was with him many times, but I don't recall him chewing in public. Not to say that he didn't sneak out behind the wood shed.....

RE: And Sometimes I Say Yes
My Tennessee grandma chewed-but used a Maxwell house can as her spittoon-not fancy but it worked.

RE: And Sometimes I Say Yes
Okay, I'm back to retching again...!!
There must have been something special about Maxwell House Coffee cans. My husband's Russian grandfather used the exact same thing as his spittoon. When my daughter was about two, she toddled over to Jeda's can and spit into it too. She got a quick lesson on chewing tobacco and a threat to never try tobacco of any kind. So far, that threat has worked (she's 40). |

RE: And Sometimes I Say Yes
Maxwell House is a Southern brand originating in Nashville and the best selling coffee for decades. Although a Southerner might enjoy spitting into New York brand (like Choc full o Nuts); he wouldn't want his friends to think that he drinks Yankee coffee.

RE: And Sometimes I Say Yes
Just for fun--the Maxwell House was a big hotel with a lot of good coffee that led to its being sold to the public all over the country. It was also the birthplace of the organized Ku Klux Klan in 1867 with Nathan Bedford Forrest and Imperial Grand Wizard. I know, the real organization of the first branch of the KKK took place in Pulaski, Tenn., a couple of years earlier.

Isn't that what Christian Rath said about the rope used at the conspirators' execution?
