Why Spielberg should win - and so should "Lincoln"
In case any of you have not seen this beautiful blog post, I found it the perfect explanation about why the "Lincoln" movie, and its director, should win top movie honors: Grandeur over Thrills
EDIT: I've added a comment to the blog post. Scroll toward the bottom to see it! Check out my web sites: http://www.petersonbird.com http://www.elizabethjrosenthal.com |

RE: Why Spielberg should win - and so should "Lincoln"
You're welcome! By the way, I added a *second* comment to the article (you have to scroll even farther down to see it). This one was not about the movie, per se, but about the historical background against which the movie was set. Basically, I couldn't help myself.

RE: Why Spielberg should win - and so should "Lincoln"
Here is a link to an article by a writer at slate.com which argues that, despite the conventional wisdom that Argo will take Best Picture, Lincoln will beat Argo (and the other nominees). Now, I no longer think Lincoln has much chance of winning anything beyond Best Actor for Daniel Day Lewis (and *maybe* Best Supporting Actor for Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens), but it's nice to read this sort of sentiment coming from somebody other than myself or the pro-Lincoln people at awardsdaily.com: http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/movie..._argo.html

Liz, here's another prediction. Maybe we can still have hope.

Roger: I hope Lincoln does win, but I don't think it will. Mostly because it hasn't done well with the other awards it was nominated for. Hope I'm wrong!

The writer of that piece says Lincoln will win because: "Lincoln is the pass line, the safest bet on the table. It's not controversial." Not controversial? Has that guy been living in a cave since November? But I hope he's right.... Check out my web sites: http://www.petersonbird.com http://www.elizabethjrosenthal.com |

RE: Why Spielberg should win - and so should "Lincoln"
Danny West sent me this link: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/20...ovie.html. As you see, it came out shortly after the movie premiered, but it's a good article by Harold Holzer as to what the historian has to expect from films. I think it speaks very well to nit-pickings and makes us realize what the chief purpose of the film is -- within reason, of course.

Liz, I love baseball plus I always enjoy "Yogi-isms." I wish the Cubs could have a catcher like him.
For those folks who are curious about the betting odds from Europe here are the latest in a variety of categories. In the best picture category the odds for Lincoln are generally in the vicinity of 5-1 with Argo an overwhelming favorite in the betting. |

RE: Why Spielberg should win - and so should "Lincoln"
Personally, I think the Lincoln picture will/should win. It's culturaly more significant, it's character and principle based, as opposed to an "action" movie. As good as Argo is, we have had several "war" movies every year. A movie like Lincoln (focusing on the true character of the man) hasn't been made since Patton.
So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

My husband has been a fan of theirs, and a baseball fanatic, since he was a young boy. And, since we got married 26 years ago, he's really brought me up to speed on the ins and outs of baseball, and has educated me on much baseball history. (I'm from New York originally; technically, I should be a Yankees fan. But I'm not.) Anyway, we'll all know in a few hours the results of the Oscars. Not me, though. I probably won't know till tomorrow morning. This will be the first time in a long time that I don't watch. I'm afraid the experience would be masochistic. GeneC, the way you express the importance of the Lincoln film is how I had been seeing it for months, until Argo took all the air out of my balloon! My favorite Yogi saying?
When asked about a certain restaurant, Yogi said, "Nobody goes there anymore-its too crowded.." |
