RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation
Isn't interesting that a discovery like this completing changes the story as we knew it? A little bit unsettling too. As I was once told by a college professor: "try to avoid hardening of the categories!"

Fascinating! Just goes to show that new things are being discovered every day which change how we look at history!

RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation
Several years ago Vicki and I were in Charleston, and we visited the Hunley. A "must see" IMO. I am in awe of the courage it took those men to get into such a small place and go on that mission.

Roger: You are so right. I mean the thought of encasing yourself in that thing and going into battle-courage beyond belief.

RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation
Vicki and I had a discussion at breakfast this morning. When we visited the Hunley in Charleston years ago I vaguely remember seeing the replica sub on display that Turner made for his movie. I thought it was in the same building that houses the Hunley. Vicki remembers no such thing. Anybody know? ("Seeing things" that don't exist wouldn't be anything new for me.)

RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation
I agree with the comments on the Hunley movie on TNT; it was a good one.
There have also been at least a couple shows on The History Channel in the last decade on the Hunley. One was on the original efforts to raise the ship (in 1995, I think). The Hunley is a story that never really goes away, and I'm glad it doesn't. |

RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation
Those guys were dedicated for"The Cause".My niece is married to a man on an Atomic Sub.Sailors are larger on the subs of today than then! I had trouble getting thru a WW11-B-24 bomber at 6'225lbs.I wonder what size the Hunley sailors were?

RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation
I did some of my own research on the Hunley's crew. They were 8 in number and between 18 and 20yrs of age. But,the most remarkable piece of research was that they were around 6'tall!It was stated that they all doubled up like a doughnut.More to come!!!

Bill,
He played Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard who apparently wanted to cancel the mission after the first two crews were drowned in trials. Joe |
