President Lincoln was shot. April 1865 had been marked by major events-the surrender of Lee, the fall of Richmond, the war coming to a close.
Remote history? I suppose. Yet, not so long ago, really. There are still a spouse or two of Civil War veterans receiving pensions. And there are still living some real sons and daughters of Civil War veterans. Even the history, itself, is still alive-and new books are being written offering fresh insights and information. RE: 148 Years Ago...
Abraham Lincoln is the second most written about person in history and the most covered part of his life is his death. To have a book in the top ten of the New York Times best seller's list for 50 weeks is increible, particularly when it is not fiction (we can split hairs later).
The National Park Service will place a wreath in front of the theater this morning and tomorrow, will have the wreath in front of the Petersen house. They usually will have historical interpretors dressed as individuals associated with the event. |

Yes, he wasn't resting much in peace after he died. How many times was his body moved?

RE: 148 Years Ago...
Roger: does that number include the "move" of the attempted corpse abduction? Was Lincoln's coffin actually moved by the robbers? Or did they not get that far?

RE: 148 Years Ago...
Bill, yes, there was enough movement of the casket to include it in the list. There is more information on the various movements here.
