Does the Peyton House stand on its original location?

Yes. It dates to the 18th century and is known as the Brockbrough-Peyton House. It desperately needs tender, loving care.

If anyone is interested in buying the Brockenbrough-Peyton house, it is for sale, though not actively listed. It has an absentee owner and needs a patron. I think Dave Taylor would look grande as the Lord of Peyton.

The government rejected his markers and Doherty may have dumped the markers in Fredericksburg. They have recently been turning up in people's yards.

To get back to the Peyton House, it has long been neglected and has cables running through the length of the house to keep it from collapsing. Even in great need of some TLC, you can visualize it's former glory. Under normal circumstances, this house would be considered a "knock down". Willie Jett tried to unload Both and Herold at several houses in Port Royal. He was almost successful with Sarah Jane Peyton.

The extent of the reach of the Confederate Secret Service has been well documented, especially by this forums John Stanton. The oral history of Port Royal has it that the residents had heard that the assassins might be heading towards Port Royal and to be wary of strangers. Maybe Sarah Jane didn't get that warning until after the "strangers" were already in the house. I can almost picture her entertaining them when someone knock on the do and says, "Do you know who the hell you have in your house!!!"

Congratualtions, not only is there the increase in benefits, there's so much more. There's the additional awe and respect you recieve from the staff at some of the finer fast food establishments, the additional attention of people pointing and staring at you when the see who you are, well it's just beyond words. I've read that Booth took ungentlemanly liberties in immediately making himself at home once inside with Sarah Jane. By this, I mean relaxing with his feet on the furniture, etc. That's when she decided that it was not proper for a woman alone in the house to entertain strangers and asked them to leave.

Mr. Hall used to tell a funny story about Miss Peyton and the census taker. I believe it is the 1860 Federal Census that lists her and gives a fairly young age for her. Beside that column, the census taker wrote in "'tain't so..." Like many others, Miss Sarah Jane evidently lied about her age - or looked a lot older than she really was.
