Thank you to Mark MacKenzie for sending these images of the Thirteenth Amendment. They are from the Lincoln Papers section at the Library of Congress website. Thaddeus Stevens' signature is on the second half two thirds down on the right.

I wonder if everyone in the audience understood that the Thirteenth Amendment did not go into effect immediately when the House passed it and Abraham Lincoln (unnecessarily) signed it. Did the movie audience understand this was not like regular legislation? Did they make it clear in the movie that 3/4 of the states had to approve it before it went into effect?

I have wondered much the same thing this year when the media has announced the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. The September 1862 date was a preliminary presentation, and the January 1, 1863, rendering it in effect truly did not mean the immediate emancipation of slaves. We tend to take shortcuts around the true hurdles that have to be overcome in order to get things working in history. We settle for symbolic meaning instead of wanting to know the machinations behind making significant advances.

The Daily Beast posted its top twelve films for 2012, and Lincoln was not included.

"Lincoln" was not listed in Time Magazine's ten best movies of the year nor was Daniel Day-Lewis included in the top ten list of movie performances. However, Tommy Lee Jones's performance as Thaddeus Stevens came in at #9.

In Sunday's NYTimes, film critics A.O. Scott and Stephen Holden recommend five Oscar nominations for "Lincoln."
Best Picture Best Actor (Day-Lewis) Best Supporting Actor (Jones) Best Supporting Actress (Field) Best Director (Spielberg) Best Adapted Screenplay (Kushner) They also collectively recommend "Armour," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," and "Zero Dark Thirty," for Best Picture. (I am clueless about these pics.) |

Not sure if this is common knowledge, but it looks like they've announced a release date of March 26th for the DVD, etc. Three days before my birthday, sweeeeet.

Well, I've finally found the time to get to see the movie today. My wife has no interest whatsoever is seeing it, so I decided since today is my day off I took her to work, will treat myself to a big breakfast, head over to the local library to do some research and then catch a matinee. Hope it's worth getting up at 5 a.m. on my day off.

Amazon just notified me that my pre-order of Lincoln has been shipped, with a delivery date of tomorrow! I'm finally going to get to see it! (except that tomorrow is a both-jobs day, so I leave at 8 o'clock in the morning, and don't get home till after 10:30 at night ... )
