RE: Extra Credit Questions
Excellent, Anita! Indeed it was Horace Greeley. The quote comes from a speech Greeley gave about Lincoln.

well done, Roger.

I thought it might be taken quickly ... but it might also test people. I was going to give a clue by saying his name has appeared on the forum many, many, many times.

RE: Extra Credit Questions
When did Lincoln put his name to the following and what caused it to be written ...

(No googling please)

"That there is nothing in the past history of the British government, or in its present expressed policy, to encourage the belief that she will aid, in any manner, in the delivery of continental Europe from the yoke of despotism; and that her treatment of Ireland, of O’Brien, Mitchell, and other worthy patriots, forces the conclusion that she will join her efforts to the despots of Europe in suppressing every effort of the people to establish free governments, based upon the principles of true religious and civil liberty."

You do have , roughly, the date.

Also the correct continent

RE: Extra Credit Questions
Roger, only in the sense that he was compared to Lafayette. ... and the naming of roads, parks and towns.

One of Lincoln's famous quotes supposedly uses words and a theme which had been used previously by this person.
