I just wanted to post the same guess (thinking of "Why was Lincoln Murdered" - maybe he, like Cesar in "De Bello Gallico", spoke about himself in 3rd person singular?)!

John Surratt, David Herold, and George Atzerodt took the weapons to be hidden at the Surratt Tavern. It was a close call as detective John C. Atzerodt was in there drinking at the time.
