Odd Fellows Hall
At the 1865 trial Weichmann testified, “I was passing down Seventh Street, in company with Mr. Surratt; and, when opposite Odd Fellows’ Hall, some one called, “Surratt, Surratt!” and, turning round, Mr. Surratt recognized an old acquaintance of his, Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, of Charles County, Md.”
The Odd Fellows' Hall still exists in D.C., despite several changes in appearance over the centuries. The link will take you (I hope, including photos) to a history of the Odd Fellows as well as their club house: http://www.streetsofwashington.com/2016/...er-on.html |

RE: Odd Fellows Hall
Wasn't it also the OddFellows Hall where John Surratt was to give a talk in the later 186'0s or early 70's?

RE: Odd Fellows Hall
Good memory, Jim!
I checked Andy Jampoler's book on John Surratt. Surratt was scheduled to speak at Odd Fellows Hall on December 30, 1870, but it was cancelled due to "pressures in Washington." |

Translation "Low ticket sales" So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

I believe the pressures were really from the government who wanted Surratt out of the spotlight and was threatening to levy some tax on him if he didn't shut up. |
