Even though I'm not a Cubs fan, I'm still amazed at the accomplishment they achieved. My congrats to Dave, Roger, and my own father who have waited a lifetime to witness this moment (all this being written as I wait on the Tarmac for a gate at Los Angeles International Airport)! Thanks, Thomas. My mother and father were both extremely strong, emotional Cubs' fans, and I deeply regret they never got to see the Cubs win a World Series.

I do not know the parade schedule, but it's possible the Cubs' parade in Chicago will be going on at the same time as your presence at the Breeders Cup.

I'm a long-suffering Cubs fan since back in the early 1970s when I used to listen to their afternoon games on WGN radio (always afternoon games because Wrigley Field had no lights for night games back then). I finally gave up on following the team because it seemed like such an exercise in futility, but in the last few weeks my interest was re-ignited. I have to admit that I did not think the Cubs would beat the Giants or the Dodgers, and I thought even less that they would beat the Indians after being down 3 games to 1. I'm so glad I was wrong, but I'm still stressed out from some of the managerial moves made in the last two games (especially the last game) that almost handed the title to the Indians. Thank God for the rain delay and Jason Heyward for taking the initiative to call a meeting so the team could regroup. Too bad Ron Santo couldn't have been here. He was my favorite player.

Kate, I agree with your post, but I think the same can be said for some of Francona's moves. IMO the one the helped the Cubs the most involved Michael Martinez. Martinez entered the game in the top of the ninth when the score was tied 6 to 6. The Cubs had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Francona then put Martinez in the outfield and removed Coco Crisp, who has a weak throwing arm. Francona was worried about a Cub hitting a sacrifice fly, and Crisp not being able to throw out a runner from third trying to score. But this also led to the weak-hitting Martinez being the last batter of the game. If it were Crisp, I would have been worried sick. But I was actually relaxed as I told Vicki that Montgomery could handle Martinez (a career .197 hitter). Two pitches later the game was over. Who knows what Crisp might have done had he been the last batter. I understand why Francona made the move, but in the end, it really helped the Cubs IMO.

The Cubs are in the Hunt for October again. My dad is pulling for them but with the Orioles out of it my only option is to stay local and say Let's go Nationals.
