RE: Timeless - a new television series
Welcome to the Milord Fillmore Discussion Symposium. Roger is in the process of correcting the heading. (Our heroes changed the past, and now that is the correct speling of his name. Now I can blame all my speling errors on that)

For those of you who may have missed last nights thrilling episode (the video may take a minute to load)

http://www.nbc.com/timeless/video/the-as...ln/3111820

The show is starting to become a soap opera about three time travelers. Little pieces of their private lives will develop the plot, but the events in time they travel to add the danger and intrigue to keep you tuned in each week. You can predict a love interest will develop with two of them (I'm guessing its Lucy and Wyatt, with a roguish bad guy - Garcia, thrown in for good measure) Plus, the ever present subplot, how their involvement and goof ups in trying to save the past events, will change the future.

It did have some elements of humor, as when Lucy gets in the time machine with her hoop skirt. And Booth's neck tie, looked like something you would find at a clothing consignment store. From a technical aspect, the opening scene of the assassination has a few errors. why NBC really needs my assistance as a creative consultant.

Still waiting for that call from NBC.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

RE: Timeless - a new television series
Thanks for the link, Gene!

Clothing was pretty bad throughout. I hated Lucy's "satin/acetate" skirt worn with a thick black belt in the opening scenes..... nothing like that would have been worn on muddy streets. Her "evening gown" was pretty good - good cut, but she would have worn a shawl and kept her shoulders covered on such a chilly evening. Why would she wear evening/ball dress to a play anyway? How many of us dress formal to go to the movies nowadays? Same precept.....

Although JWB, Atzerodt and Powell looked really good, JWB's lack of a vest and the strange cravat/neckwear looked like he had a handtowel tied about his neck. Besides he really wore a blue flannel shirt to Ford's that night. His hat was also kinda dorky, like something bought at Party City..... Powell didn't even have a hat on when he went to Seward's! What was that about? Otherwise his attire looked pretty good. The kid playing him appeared to have "lifts" on - a 6' 1 1/2" guy isn't really that tall.

I'd say that over all, the clothing was pretty bad, but the sets were surprisingly quite good; probably CG. I still don't get why General and Julia Grant as well as Robert Lincoln were in the box at Fords.... Had Julia actually been there, I'm sure that the audience would have much preferred to watch the catfight in the box between Mrs. Grant and Mrs Lincoln rather than watching the play on stage.....

I'm much too critical - even thought I know it's all in fun.....sorry!

Where did Grant go after Lucy purposely spilled the water on him?

RE: Timeless - a new television series
Timeless is an hour of my life I will never get back. I felt like Mr. Peabody met the Magic Treehouse and James Darren. I first thought that Grant was Henry Rathbone. While Dave Taylor and I were both impressed by the set design of Ford's Theater, I thought it was a terrible interpretation of the assassination. What really got to me was Payne getting his rear end kicked before attacking Seward and this version of George Atzerodt had the guts to attempt to kill Johnson. Who wrote this garbage?

I wondered that myself! At first I thought "Grant" was supposed to be Rathbone.....but he had too much hair and was too old. I then saw the logo and wreathes on his hat and knew he was a General. Where were Rathbone and Clara?

Maybe the good General had to go find a towel....

RE: Timeless - a new television series
Did you notice how politically incorrect they are in this series?
A bad guy named Garcia?
Is he an illegal alien? With a Spanish name like Garcia is he suppose to be from Mexico or Central America? He looks more Eastern European.
And a black man named Rufus? A well educated computer tech named Rufus?
Give me a break!

Tongue

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

That is what I thought, too. Ford's did not have indoor plumbing, so I was just curious where he was going. For some reason the water must have really bothered him as he seemed to depart quickly. I would have thought the good General could handle a little water on the shoulder...

You would think he could "shoulder" it! Especially after he showed up at Appomattox supposedly splattered with mud! Dodgy

I knew we'd eventually agree on something!

Oh, how I wanted to slap that lady timetraveller. One more of her whiny, moral-soaked speeches and I would have punched the screen. Has she not seen "Back to the future"?

I liked Rufus - he is funny and I very much enjoyed his interactions with the gentleman from the colored regiment.

@Gene_C: I am so in love with your version of events. It would mean that a)the episode was good and b)much more preferable ending.
I'd happily post on the Milord Fillmore Forum if in return I would get to mull over four more years worth of Lincoln writings.

In case of emergency, Lincoln and children first.

RE: Timeless - a new television series
Watched the Lincoln episode of Timeless last evening. It wasn't good history and it wasn't even great TV, but I really enjoyed it. I'm sure all of us could list at least 20 errors, and some of you could probably list 50, but it was really great fun to be on Tenth Street on April 14, albeit only remotely from my modern couch.

That said, a lot of things were really annoying -- all the things you all mentioned and the people falling pell mell around the presidential box.

RE: Timeless - a new television series
Hi everyone,

I was asked to write a review of the television show "Timeless" and in particular the episode that featured the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

My review appears at the link below. I was asked to write this review as I've got a great deal of interest in this topic for you see my novel "36 Hours to Save the President" is about a time traveler who is given the chance to stop the Lincoln Assassination. The website Time Travel Nexus is the site that posted (and requested) the review.

Here is the link to the review: http://timetravelnexus.com/timeless-epis...m-lincoln/

Thanks for sharing your review, Alan!

(I am still wondering how Robert Lincoln came into possession of the Grants' theater tickets!)

RE: Timeless - a new television series
FTW, the story shows that Gen. Grant and Mrs. Grant were unable to get out of Washington City because of sabotage to the train, and thus they went with the Lincolns, rather than Maj. Rathbone and... I forget her name. The train was sabotaged because the bad guy wanted both Lincoln and Grant (and Johnson, too) to be killed: he succeeded in killing Lincoln but not Grant.

Good review. I will comment on this, though:

Quote:A silly instance takes place when Lucy intentionally spills water on Grant causing him to leave the box. Was this done to ensure that Grant would be safe and not present when the assassin appears? Apparently not, as he returns before the assassin enters the box.

I think, yes, that was indeed the purpose of spilling the water; it did not work, however, as Grant came back quickly.

I have endured a great deal of ridicule without much malice; and have received a great deal of kindness, not quite free from ridicule. I am used to it. (Letter to James H. Hackett, November 2, 1863)

RE: Timeless - a new television series
Finally got a chance watch the Lincoln Assassination episode. Ugh. I was very disappointed. Not only was there a lot of questionable history but I found there to be way too many plot contrivances. This show should be right up my alley (sci-fi and history!) but the episode I did watch was just not executed very well. I will probably try to watch the first 5 episodes to gain some context but if no better at that point, I will be done.
