One neighbor, Mrs. (Anna Eastman) Johnson, recalled seeing this as a young girl. She described it this way:

"My first recollection is that he seemed very tall. He was a grotesque figure, wearing a long linen duster and a tall hat, ridiculously tall."

Mrs. Johnson would likely faint dead away if she saw the height of many people today. I once read a story about a Union soldier who was 6'6" and was captured by the Confederates. Supposedly, instead of shipping him off to a prison camp, they paraded him through Southern cities as proof that the Yankees were huge beasts who would come South to eat the women and children. What better proof than to have one on display.
