Raking up leaves, the world series on, and the always enjoyable leadup to the Holidays. I'm already half way exhausted on my candy supply to trick or treaters.

I think the Lincoln boys (except for Robert) would have been great at trick- or treating, especially at tricking. (This and Halloween in all forms of expression has become en-vogue here, too, but was unknown when I was a child.) As for Robert, I can only remember he pranked once in school or at college, together with classmates, but he was the (only) one to be caught and blamed.

I think I had Tad and his brothers come to my door last night. Gave them a handful of candy and they ran off screaming to the next house, candy wrappers flying.

What's the story on Mr. Lincoln and race tracks? Did he enjoy or ever attend horse races? Lord knows, while in the White House, he should have had plenty of opportunities to visit tracks that abounded in Maryland (the home of Thoroughbred racing). It was very popular just outside the city gates in Prince George's County. He might also have seen jousting matches in the area - a sport that no one thinks about today, but is still the official sport of the State of Maryland.

Laurie, I read somewhere that they had occasional horse races at New Salem, and Lincoln was chosen as the steward who enforced the rules and determined the winner. I am sure the New Salem "race track" itself was extremely informal; I highly doubt the officials at Keeneland would recognize its legitimacy!
