Well, then, while I am waiting - I have a question for you, Betty! What happened to Lewis' front teeth? When the skull was found, were the front teeth still in place? Or gone, taken as some form of trophy? I would have loved to have seen that cute "imperfection" one of his teeth was supposed to have. Ha! |

Could be that in moving him around from cemetery to cemetery they got knocked out -- OR they could have been taken as some sort of gruesome trophy.... I don't know. On the subject of the Branson girls, I read that Civil War Nurses had to be over 30 and plain, preferably with grey hair and spectacles! Surely, our Lew wasn't that desperate! I wonder what happened to those. Probably got destroyed when she found out he was a conspirator. I guess that info could have been involved her more than she was comfy with. ‘I’ve danced at Abraham Lincoln’s birthday bash... They were both described as 'handsome" - so....no I would not think Lew was desperate! A young man with a strong crush perhaps, but not desperate by any measure.... Lew did have a VA girlfriend named "Betty" - no relation! HA! As far as we know these items still existed according to James O. Hall, as late as the 1890s -- I'm checking! (08-25-2012 06:36 AM)LincolnMan Wrote: Betty: how is that we have pictures of Lew's skull? Hey, Bill! Back in 1992, things were not as strict as they are now.... We were allowed to see Lew's skull, handle it to our hearts' content, photograph it - and even clown around with it.... no white gloves involved - at all! Just our bare hands. I got to "see" him two separate times before he was shipped home to "mama"! HA! One thing I was amazed at was how small the skull actually was! It seemed his head was smaller than mine - and he was a big boy! I asked the anthropologist why it seemed small and he stated that it was because the muscle, tissue, fat, nerves, and other things makes the head appear larger. If that's the case, than mine must be miniscule! "The Past is a foreign country...they do things differently there" - L. P. Hartley |

Thank you Betty! It must have been an incredible experience, to come face to face with Lewis like that.

Oh, it was an experience all right! I'd never SEEN a real human skull before - much less handled one. The skeletons we had in science class in school had been made of plastic. This was the real thing. Lew's skull had a mottled appearance and the anthropologist told me this was called "coffin rot." I later questioned Dr. Houmes on this and he stated that "coffin rot" is where the wood of the casket touches the bones, turning them to a different color as the wood leaches, I guess fluids, into the remains. Yes, it was an incredible experience - especially for an author to "meet" her biographical subject 127 years after he died! "The Past is a foreign country...they do things differently there" - L. P. RE: Lewis Powell's Jaw
Betty: you're too much! You just crack me up. Anyway, like you said-that had to be such a special moment. So Lew'e entire remains were sent to Florida for final burial? Did you see the parts of him? And one other question: were you a tomboy? It's not every female that would lay around with a human skull!
