Lincoln and Civil War research is FUN!
I have known people on this forum[cyber friends] for at least 8yrs now!I have felt the need to prove my research[rightfully-so]for every post that I have made. The most recent one is the 1st soldier to die in the in the Civil War is an ancestor of my friend.I have never had so much fun in my career! It is easier for me to do the research, given that I am retired, and now that I have Parkinson's disease. My Doctor wants me to be busy, thus, I will be busy doing Lincoln and Civil War research that is FUN!

That's great Herb. As someone who has not developed that talent, this is just another characteristic of you that I admire.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

Herb -

All the best to you, m'dear! Keep at it - the work and memories are well worth it all. It's a true blast, trust me! It'll help you keep your troubles at bay.....

I find that the research (the "Chase" as I call it!) is often far more fun than the "find" or the "Kill" in the words of foxhunters.....although the find is often enough totally awesome! It's what keeps me going as well. I am "underemployed" and trapped in a hideous true dead-end job from which I cannot wait to escape in a couple of years. Until then, when asked what I do for a living, I say "historical research and writing." It's what keeps me going. My job just pays the bills and is nothing more than that. It is not a so-called "career" in any way, shape or form - my historical pursuits and computer/graphics are my career! It's the most fun I've ever had in my life and the memories and friendships I've made over all the years as well as all the "finds" we Boothies have accomplished in the past and now, are well worth the ride!

"The Past is a foreign country...they do things differently there" - L. P. Hartley

Herb, as one who has known you for several years, I have to say your comments are spot-on. One thing I think of when I think of you was your disappointment at hearing the recreated funeral train will not be stopping in Fairport (or anywhere else). Actually, for a time, I had read that the recreated funeral car might not even be in Springfield for the reenactment of the funeral in early May. However, the latest news as I understand it, is that the replica of the funeral car will indeed be transported to Springfield for that event.

RE: Lincoln and Civil War research is FUN!
After reading and rereading all Lincoln's speeches, it does not appear to me that he seriously understood that most all the South would secede and form their own country, then go to War if invaded. I know Lincoln had no true military record like President Davis and first-hand knowledge of the harsh realities that attend it. But I wonder if Lincoln had truly understood that his actions would bring on the bloodiest war of all time here, whether he would have actually gone to War? I am certain that most all the residents of the North would never have joined in, if they had any clue of what was to follow.

I think you are correct. Lincoln did not truly or fully believe that the south would take action as it did. However, he was a quick learner afterward.

RE: Lincoln and Civil War research is FUN!
Let's not be too hard on Lincoln not believing the South would secede, After all. look at the historical record as Lincoln surely did:

Episodes of Threatened Secession from the 1787 Constitution: 1798 (Kentucky [one state alone] and Virginia [several states together] Resolves), 1814 (Hartford Convention [New England secession]), 1832 (Nullification Crisis [South Carolina over the tariff of 1828]), Abolitionists (1840s [Over the Constitution 's approval of slavery as a "covenant with death and an agreement with hell"]), 1850 (Nashville Convention [over the Compromise of 1850]). Remember that NY, RI, and VA all signed the Constitution with secession provisos amended to it. None of this proved to be big talk so the secession of 1860-1861 was the exception to the rule till then.

Bill N. said it best, Lincoln was a fast learner, by demand of changing events

RE: Lincoln and Civil War research is FUN!
I think if he did he (like many) expected it to be a short-lived "affair". I any case I think he was firm in not going to allow slavery to spread into the new territories.
