Waddell is one of my favorite historical personalities. He was branded by Northern newspapers as a sort of modern day Black Beard {He was, of course, no such thing, it was just that he could not be bested on the high seas, so, slam him in the press. How novel}.

And by delivering that message and field glass, she earned herself the death penalty by showing that she was involved with the assassin up to within hours of the deed. If any of you have read my speech, which I referred to in the post about Kate Larson's positions, you'll know that my conclusion on Mary was/is that she was guilty under the letter of the law and the principle of vicarious liability. I do not believe that abduction and assassination should be two separate conspiracies. They exist under the same legal principle as what we call felony murder today. I just can't convince myself that she knew exactly what was planned at 10:30 pm on the night of April 14, 1865.

I have to bore you with another personal experience based on Eva's German proverb regarding ignorance of the law. For several years, I had a hated assignment of teaching 9th grade government to several classes. This was in the late-1960s when we were beginning the drug culture, formation of gangs, civil rights (if you want to call them that) riots, etc. Therefore, I was very strong on teaching the need to know the law and respect the law. "Ignorance of the law is no excuse" could have become my motto!

One day on my way home from work, I decided that McDonald's would be doing the cooking that night. I pull over into the left-hand turn lane (just a little bit before the yellow line tells me I can) and stop at the Golden Arches nearest to my school. The next thing I know, blinking lights and a short siren pull up behind me in the parking lot. A county police officer gets out and gives me a lecture about moving forward on the shoulder of the road before getting into the designated turn lane.

I knew there were folks in the parking lot watching this. I apologized and said that I did not know that it was against the law to pull over just short of the widening lane sign. All of a sudden, I heard about 4-5 voices yell, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse!"

Yep, I made a fool of myself, but proved my point, in front of a half-dozen of my students who were also enjoying McDonald's french fries! That darn officer had the biggest grin on his face, but he also only gave me a warning.

Another weird, personal aside: My daughter's former father-in-law is the only licensed privateer in the United States, being appointed such by President Ronald Reagan. My son-in-law and his siblings were raised on a pirate ship that their father constructed, and they participated in Pirate Fests along the East Coast. The father, legal name now Horatio Sinbad, now works with Living Classrooms in teaching children the rudiments of sailing and the history of piracy.

At the children's wedding, Sinbad was in full regalia, and the wedding cake was cut with his saber. When they first started dating, Jen warned Ross that her mother was friends with people that wore Civil War garb at Surratt House and also did Civil War reenactments. Ross started laughing and then told her of his parents' escapades as pirates.

Nope, Herb. And he might lob your ear off for suggesting that... His piratical interests are no laughing matter with him. His father was a vice president in General Motors as are several brothers. Sinbad was on his way up the corporate ladder until he jumped ship and headed for the sea.
