RE: David Herold's dog
[Powell had numerous pets, according to his family - a dog, a cat, guinea hens, a pet goat as well as the infamous mule who kicked him in the face at age 12. He also had a favorite thoroughbred bay mare when he was riding with Mosby. According to the Payne family, Powell had several mounts and these horses were left at one of the Payne farms when he went through the lines to go to Baltimore in January of 1865. Apparently the horse he sold in Alexandria was not his pet mare.]// quote
Betty, how I wish there were photos of at least one of Lew's pets in your bio...I am almost done btw! |

RE: David Herold's dog
Thanks, Toia! Hope it doesn't put you to sleep! I wish that there were more photos as well.... I'd just love to know the names of Lew's pets - especially the name of the old horse he rode on the 14th of April. Mr. James O. Hall always said that he knew at one time what that horse's name was but he could never remember it! We know that the name of Davey Herold's horse was "Charley." We also don't know the name of Booth's mare.

RE: David Herold's dog
I have spent the last forty years putting down the story told to students at the Surrattsville High School by their "cute, young, history teacher" that the town's name was changed to "Clinton" because that was the name of Booth's horse! I refer to it being a mare and that "Clintonette" would have been more appropriate...

I had no idea how significantly this "older woman" figured in his life. I bet there is a good, bittersweet love story just waiting to be told...... |

This boy had something going for older women - and there's lots more which will be revealed in the 2nd Edition of Alias - "The Past is a foreign country...they do things differently there" - L. P. RE: David Herold's dog
Amazon has the 2nd edition available for pre-order. Release date is November 30th. As I have mentioned before, I love amazon.com. They give you access to titles not available anywhere else. However, if you buy "Alias" through the Surrat Society, you help support an organization that should be near and dear to all of our hearts.

RE: David Herold's dog
Thanks for the plug, Jim. All sales at Surratt House stay at Surratt House - and trust me, the museum needs it more than Amazon! We just updated our mail order list on our website, so you can see we have plenty to offer. http://www.surrattmuseum.org
