So far, I'm avoiding Google! The last quote, however, seems to indicate that it was made during a war crisis - probably one of the World Wars? May I ask if that is a clue?

Yes, the same person, Gene. Churchill is a good guess, but sorry, not correct. Laurie is closer to the era (re. the last quote). Thanks for holding back on googling.

This is an outstanding guess, Roger, but, sorry, not correct.

Hint #4: Like Hemingway, this person once received the Nobel Prize, but in a different category.

You are very gracious, Eva. Thank you. Germany and the USA are the two top-rated women's soccer teams in the world. It was a great victory for the Americans. Now we will wait and see if we play Japan or England on Sunday.
