I decapitated Lincoln

Well, not really, but I did succeed in breaking the head off the little statue I purchased at the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. I was moving some books and it took a header (no pun intended).


If you look at the left side, you can tell where I glued it back on. So far it seems to be staying OK.

All this got me to thinking. I've always wanted a large bust of Lincoln similar in size to the one pictured here with Sandburg. (Sidenote: this is the picture I want to use on the cover of my Sandburg book.


The problem is, like most things, such a large bust costs a great deal of money. For example, look at these from the Abraham Lincoln Bookshop in Chicago.


This goes for $7,000.


This will set you back $15,000!

These were done by the sculptor Max Bachmann, and I'm sure they're worth every penny, but they're far beyond my modest means. So, the point of all this is a question....what is your favorite Lincoln sculpture? One of mine would be this one:



It's only $45 and is available in the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. I also like this one by Augustes Saint-Gaudens, which is located in the Brooklyn Museum. It is similar to the one in Springfield.

I would like to find one by Vinnie Ream. Not only do I like her work, she was an incredible young talent, but her personal story is interesting too.

My favorite is the desktop Lincoln I received as a Christmas gift. It includes a mini biography of Lincoln and a scroll of the Gettysburg Address.

It's shocking to see that the entire Gettysburg Address can fit onto a 3" by 6" piece of paper that you can hold in the palm of your hand.

Who is the sculptor of the bust pictured with Sandburg?

I'm not sure. I know the picture was taken in 1960 by June Glenn Jr., who was a photographer from the Asheville newspaper. In all the mentions of it, I've not found who the sculptor is. Here's another view of the bust.

Mr. Glenn was a prolific photographer. I wonder if there are any published books of his many pictures.

Allegedly she had an 'affair' with Gen. Sherman after the War.

I hadn't read that before.
She did lobby Sherman and and Mrs Farragut, and won a competition to do a statue of Admiral David Farragut.

There was a bit of a smear campaign in 1868 against her and Senator Edmund Ross from Kansas (who boarded with her family and cast the deciding vote against impeachment of Andrew Johnson)

A savvy young man I know here in Delaware, who has no real interest in Lincoln but likes a good bust, was shopping in an odds-and-ends store in Wilmington when he found a heavy metal bust of Mr. Lincoln. He asked the price and was told it was $135, an excellent price for really nice bust about 7-8 inches high, I thought. He wrote $80 on the back of his biz card and handed it to the salesperson, adding, "When it comes down to $80, please call me." She sold it to him for $80 on the spot. He went online and learned its worth low thousands, I forget how many, if he can get a crack in the base and neck area repaired,,probably at the Winterthur-UD labs here.
Last time I saw it, he was on the hunt for a tiny Santa hat for Abe to wear last Christmas.
