I don't think we should let the momentum die. Let's follow the Chinese educational principle of "each one teach one" and try to enroll more people as amateur historians.
Here is an example of a professional historian that we need to teach: A friend called to tell me that she attended a lecture this week on the Lincoln assassination, given by a professor of history from Marshall University. Being a former president of the Surratt Society, this friend nearly fell off her chair when she heard this gentleman say that John Surratt, Jr. was hanged along with his mother because he came back to try and save her. I also heard a participant in today's events at Ford's being interviewed on the morning news. The statement was made that Oswell Swann took the fugitives into his home, fed them, but also sent word to Union troops that he had people they might be looking for. What a way for me to start the day! |
