Since some of you helped the Surratt Society to raise funds necessary to replace the stolen historical marker at the Garrett Farm (when the State of Virginia said it could not afford it), I can tell you that a new sign costs in the neighborhood of $1630+, which is what we just wrote a check for. Hopefully the grave marker for Mark Twain is in good shape and does not have to be duplicated - just mounted. BTW: The new Garrett marker is in place and will be dedicated on Sunday, April 26 (a fitting date - guess why). The ceremonies will take place at the little Port Royal Museum about two miles north of the site. I believe the time is about 3 pm, however, Caroline County is sponsoring a whole weekend of events to commemorate the 150th. Question: Does Twain's marker use his pen name or his real name? |
