Arrest made in Mark Twain' grave being vandalized - HerbS - 03-09-2015 04:20 PM

A 32yr-old male has been arrested for vandalizing Mark Twain's grave! This arrest came after a $10,000 grant for replacing the plaque was posted by the "Friends of Woodlawn".The perpetrator has been given a trial date, and placed on a $600.00 bond. The prosecutor stated he had to have used a ladder[duh].

"$600.00 Bond!?" Only $600.00?!? Outrageous -- I'm so glad that they caught him....

I agree- $600.00 doesn't seem like much- but at least he is caught.

$600.00 seems like nothing to me,but I am glad that they caught him also.More to come when I get the info. Here is a case where the crime does not fit with the punishment.

My thoughts also, $600.00 dollars. I also am happy they caught him. The real question is what causes a person to think about doing such a thing? I hope the punishment is more in line with the crime then his bail.

I am glad he was caught as well. This is horrible.

The suspect was fined $1000,and if the plaque is worth more than $1000,the fine will be more.DUH!

Mark Twain's grave vandalized-update - HerbS - 04-04-2015 06:52 PM

The plaque on Mark Twain's grave was 16 pounds, and found in good condition. The suspect was fined only $1000,but if the plaque is worth more than $1000,the fine will be more.Go figure-DUH!

Since some of you helped the Surratt Society to raise funds necessary to replace the stolen historical marker at the Garrett Farm (when the State of Virginia said it could not afford it), I can tell you that a new sign costs in the neighborhood of $1630+, which is what we just wrote a check for. Hopefully the grave marker for Mark Twain is in good shape and does not have to be duplicated - just mounted.

BTW: The new Garrett marker is in place and will be dedicated on Sunday, April 26 (a fitting date - guess why). The ceremonies will take place at the little Port Royal Museum about two miles north of the site. I believe the time is about 3 pm, however, Caroline County is sponsoring a whole weekend of events to commemorate the 150th.

Question: Does Twain's marker use his pen name or his real name?

RE: Arrest made in Mark Twain' grave being vandalized - HerbS - 04-06-2015 07:51 AM

The plaque was in Mark Twain's name and found in good shape. At least, that's what the Elmira,NY newspaper reports!

Hope by now the plaque has been restored. I thought of this thread because I passed Mark Twain Street in Detroit this week.
