When I was in grade school I had to memorize the Gettysburg Address. I left grade school in 1957. My first year of teaching was 1966, and memorizing things was definitely not part of what I was told to teach. We were told to emphasize critical thinking skills in the classroom and not require the students to memorize important passages, etc. So in the area of the country I lived the change came in the late 1950's and 1960's. |
