RE: Who is this person?
I'm aware, "Henry and Clara" is no reliable source, on the other hand the author claims to stick close to research. Mallon "suggests", amongst others, one trip to Europe (Paris) in 1876. Still Pendel refers to Ohio (where "Mrs Lincoln was living"), too. How could that be explaained then?

I'm becoming more convinced that it's Pendel's recall that's the problem. He was born in 1824 so he was 78 when the book was published. Maybe he was just confused. Eva, Thanks for directing me to earlier discussions on this forum about whether Rathbone actually worked for the State Dept. on assignment in Germany. |

All good guesses, indeed, but I'm sorry, none is correct. Roger's is the closest.

Eva, Thanks for directing me to earlier discussions on this forum about whether Rathbone actually worked for the State Dept. on assignment in Germany. Just received this: Thank you for contacting the Ohio Historical Society Research Services Department. We have not been able to find any source that suggests that Mary Todd Lincoln ever visited Poe, Ohio. |

RE: Who is this person?
Anita, thank you for checking on this. I was 99% certain she never lived in Poe, Ohio, but I hesitated to go to 100%. You just never know on some things. We have a forum member, Cyndy Irvine, who discovered a trip Mary made that I am pretty certain is not in any Mary Lincoln book I own. I do believe it's a new discovery, and Cyndy posted about it here. Cyndy's published article is online here.

RE: Who is this person?
Roger, I see what you mean. I am learning! Thank you so much for these links. What an amazing discovery Cindy has made. It's a fascinating story. Mary was a traveler before but especially after Lincoln's death. More will be revealed about places she's visited, maybe even Poe, Ohio!
