Can you imagine, after the leap to the stage, Booth rising to his feet shouting "The South shall be free." With his comb-over dangling in the breeze.

Time for a cartoon, Mike!

Even today he would turn heads.
I wonder what he looked like when he smiled (if he ever did?)!
Does anyone know how many photos of JWB were taken, and when the first one?

Back then almost no one smiled for pictures (I say "almost" because there have been a few surprisingly smiley people in CDVs, but they are definitely not in the majority). It was just how it went. I am sure JWB smiled while going about his everyday business but I doubt he ever outright smiled and showed his teeth for a picture. That's too bad because I'd sure love to see one like that! Big Grin

In a couple of pictures he does look like he has a small smile though... or at least he has a *very* pleasant looking manner that looks like he has a tiny smile in my opinion (make of that what you will!).

From the Gutman book :

(Sorry for the lines - I need to clean my scanner.)

I think this could be a slight variation of the picture in this pose that we usually see, like the one Betty found below, in which he doesn't look very "smiley." I have been meaning to compare them in Photoshop but never have.

As for how many were taken and when the first one was, I don't think we know for sure. Sad

Good one, Mike. I think you and Betty should go into business.

Your cartoon reminded me of this past Tuesday while I was getting a hair cut. A gentleman walked in right ahead of me with a thick head of hair. His beautician wasn't quite ready for him. I get a shampoo and am sitting waiting for my "do" to begin when the gentleman walks past me to get a shampoo - with practically no hair! His thick head of hair was a toupee/rug that they had removed so that it could be cleaned separately. He was sporting a nearly bald head that had to be de-glued to get rid of whatever holds those hair pieces in place.

P.S. Was the blood on Booth's dagger from Henry, or did Johnny nick his own forehead in the jump?

I agree - I'm sure he was very pleasant looking - I also think Lew Powell must have been a doll when he smiled as well, with those dimples; bad teeth aside....

That's a GREAT story Laurie. I would have loved to see that.

I thought it was from Henry. but I guess Booth could have scalped himself.

Thank you for your comment, Jenny, and for taking time to scan these photos! It's amazing, the first two photos look like the same one at the first glance, but indeed, upon closer examination, the upper one seems more "smiley"!

My Gutman book is packed away, but it is the best source for determining how many photos of JWB have been found. A few have been discovered since the book was published nearly 35 years ago. Richard and Kellie also documented where and when the photos were taken whenever they could.

No problem, Eva! Smile

I would not be surprised that if JWB had lived into his 30's and 40's, he may very well have sported a comb-over. The master of the comb-over during that period was non other than Robert E. Lee. He was very fastidious about his appearance, trimming his hair and beard almost every day.
