A great article Rob. It is well worth a read. BTW, the book of clippings that Thomas Jefferson refers to was on display at the Smithsonian about a year ago. It has recently been restored, but still pretty fragile.

That must have been quite an artifact to see, Jim. I've always liked JFK's comment at the 1962 dinner honoring the Nobel Prize winners when he said "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House, with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."

But, yes, I do think it was a minor form of vandalism, in the scheme of things. It could have been a lot worse. I just don't see getting all hysterical about it and using this as yet another excuse to lament the downfall of civilization.

No you see it as an opportunity to attack conservatives. Yikes.

RE: Sad - Gene C - 08-13-2013 03:00 PM

OK boys and girls, let's not go there. The person who committed the vandalism obviously has some problems, mental or otherwise. Hopefully she will be prosecuted, punished - based somewhat on her mental state, then deported.

"Minor vandalism" is relative. Nothing was destroyed, the damage can be repaired, this time. Restitution, should be made, if possible. Fines and punishment needs to be administered swiftly to discourage future
incidents. If she can't make restitution, bill her home country embassy. (deduct double the repair expense from the foreign aid we give them)

Update, the wheels of justice need an alignment

I cannot say whether the person is actually mentally ill or not. But I can tell you that out psychiatric wards (at least here in Michigan) are filled with criminals...

It's no big surprise considering what is happening, but the Lincoln Memorial has been vandalized, again!

I saw that too. I think we all pretty much felt this was going to happen. As in the Civil War era, we too live in "interesting" times.

Someone used a penny to carve something into a pillar on the Lincoln Memorial

RE: Sad - ELCore - 09-19-2017 06:34 PM

I suppose I'd better try to get there and see it soon, before they decide not to let the public anywhere near it anymore. Sad

HYPT MAEK? Does anyone speak Russian? The article didn't provide a translation from what I saw. I also read that the student was surprised that he was in trouble an didn't know that defacing a national monument and damage to public property was unacceptable.

Appalling. I find it difficult to believe that he was surprised that he could get in trouble. Maybe surprised that he got caught.

"At the monument, the officer saw and heard Bakirov scratching the penny into the pillar and asked him what he was doing.

"Sorry," Bakirov reportedly said, and then tried to walk away.

The officer ordered him to stop, and after the second time, Bakirov did.
He apologized and said he "didn’t know that you can’t do that," the report says.
"Am I in trouble for doing this?" he asked."
