RE: Booth's mistress, Ella Starr, and other "unknown" Booth ladies! - Jenny - 05-09-2018 02:49 PM Actually it helped a ton in finding it, Steve! RE: Booth's mistress, Ella Starr, and other "unknown" Booth ladies! - Steve - 05-09-2018 06:10 PM The Etta letter is two different letters and was incorrectly combined in Evidence! (I don't know if they were incorrectly combined by investigators at the time.) Evidence has this at the start of the letter: New York April 13 Dear Wilkes, I received your letter of the 12th (stating you would be in this city on the 16th inst.) this morning and hasten to answer it. On account of a misunderstanding between my landlady and your humble servant, I have been obliged to leave her hospitable mansion and am now (for the time being) stopping at the New York Hotel, after your arrival should you not approve of my present location, it can easily be changed to suit your convenience. before going into: Yes Dear, I can heartily sympathize with you... at the start of the 2 images you found signed Etta (top of the letter). Etta's letter says "so will I in you and Wllkes have said vengenance is mine." That seems to imply Wilkes is someone different than who Etta is writing to. The last line in the postscript Ahem!!! Sam would seem to indicate that Sam is the name of the person Etta is writing to. RE: Booth's mistress, Ella Starr, and other "unknown" Booth ladies! - Steve Whitlock - 10-10-2019 10:54 AM I have some information for the mother, sister, brother and a couple of nieces for Ella Starr if anyone is interested. That includes when they died, but still trying to find Ella; however, a court case may suggest she was deceased when John W. Starr, her brother, died and her mother and sister contested his will, but no mention of Ella as an heir. The will of Mary Jane Treakle shows she had 2 daughters, Mary Virginia Treakle and Alice Teresa Treakle. This is a thread that's been around awhile, so perhaps that information has come out already, so I'll wait to see if there is any interest. RE: Booth's mistress, Ella Starr, and other "unknown" Booth ladies! - Susan Higginbotham - 10-10-2019 11:28 AM I would be interested. RE: Booth's mistress, Ella Starr, and other "unknown" Booth ladies! - L Verge - 10-10-2019 12:12 PM Many moons ago, Terry Alford told me that he had tracked Ella down and that she had married well. He refused to tell me any details until Fortune's Fool was published. I saw no mention of his findings, so I contacted him and got no response. The History Channel crew that is due here at Surratt House next week wanted him for their production on Booth also, but as of a few weeks ago, he had not responded. If anyone is still in contact with Terry, you might have better luck...? Susan, I'm sure you know all the information in this thread, so I'll skip ahead a bit to Mary Virginia "Jennie" (Treakle) Bartlett, wife of Giles Bartlett, and some news clips. I got the clips out of order for the contested will of John W. Starr insofar as Louis T. Starr is concerned, but you can see in the final decision that the judge declared Louis wasn't really his son. Mollie "Towner" is, of course, Mollie Turner, aka Mary Jane (Starr) Treakle. I tried to attach the will of Mary Jane, but the system won't let me. I may have to get Roger's assistance for that. You might note the clip for a "sister" of Mrs Giles Bartlett visiting 5 years after her death. I haven't pinned her down yet, but if really a sister she should be Alice Teresa (Treakle) McJenkins. While looking for Terry Alford's claimed information I came across a post of yours from the "Andrew Johnson-His Mistress" thread, and noticed better news clips for the probate of John W. I believe Steve found the article a while back and I called the Baxter Springs Museum, but unfortunately they never got around to sending me any info I requested. Jenny, As an aside, back at the beginning of this thread in your initial discussion of Ella there was this: "Mother Starr ended up back in Baltimore, where she worked for a Catholic school. In 1888, she deeded a lot in the New Cathedral Cemetery to "my daughter Ellie..." Nellie must have been still alive and around somewhere, but I don't think anyone has found her. Mr. Hall speculated that she changed her name to Nellie LaRue and was operating a house in her old DC haunts in the early-1870s, but couldn't prove the link. He did locate the name of a niece, Mary Virginia Treakle, who married a Giles Bartlett in Huron, Ohio, in 1873, and had two children." The Nellie LaRue mentioned, and the only Nellie LaRue I found, was in the 1880's and 1890's. She died in 1899, and her death notice reveals she was Mary (Williams? Rue, wife of Manning F. Rue. The Evening Star, 12 Apr 1892 Death of Mr. Zadok Williams The venerable Mr. Zadok Williams, died last evening at the residence of his son, Joseph Z. Williams, 1314 3d street southeast. Mr. Williams had spent all the eighty-seven years of his life in this city, and was familiar with its early history, retaining a remarkably clear recollection of scenes and incidents of former years. Mr. Williams was born near Benning, February 15, 1805. His father, who served in the War of 1812, came to this city from Prince George's county, Md., in 1810, and located in East Washington. In 1814, when the British attacked this city, Mr. Williams remembered well when Commodore Tingey had the old Navy Yard bridge burned to keep the British from coming to the city. He also gathered with an old colored man many pieces of the old guns destroyed by the British at the marine barracks and placed them in an old lockup that stood near the navy yard gate. When quite a young man he learned the tailor business under Mr. Jewell in Georgetown and had made garments for many celebrated and distinguished persons of the day, among them Mr. E.W.P. Custis of Arlington, with whom he was personally acquainted. He owned from time to time much property in this section and also owned the famous "race course track," purchased from the late Mr. Thomas Blagden, and sold it to the United States government to form a part of the asylum tract, reserving the original race track, which he subsequently sold to private individuals. He married in 1828 Miss Edney Ann Denoon, by whom he had a large family. Two sons and three daughters survive him -- Mr. Joseph Z. Williams, Mr. George Williams, Mrs. Joseph Grinder, Mrs. Enoch M. Norris and Mrs. M.F Rue -- and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mrs. Williams died in July 1853, and he married a second time, Miss Mary Morton of Baltimore, Md., who died in July 1886, and left no family. Mr. Williams was up to a few years ago engaged in business. He was a member of the Oldest Inhabitants' Society and was the oldest parishioner of Christ Church, East Washington. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock from the late residence. The interment will be at Congressional cemetery." _____ Mary (Morton) Williams was originally buried in R35/80, but was "Removed to unknown on". Zadock was moved from R35/253 on 14 Dec 1893. I hope that helps in regards to Mrs. Starr's will... thus far it seems she did not leave one. Quote:Jenny, Mr. Hall hypothesized the possible "Nellie LaRue" connection, but it never rang true to me. The McJenkins came from a news clipping for Mrs McJenkins visiting her sister, Mrs Giles Bartlett. Starr Jr and Marie Antoinette Starr where she claims marriage in 1869, the divorce in 1871, with a remarriage in 1871. I didn't confirm any of those dates. As for the will or probate of Mrs Ellen Starr, I found some Starr wills in Baltimore, but none of them Ellen. She should have had an estate needing a probate, and yet there is nothing showing for that. Could Ella have borrowed her sister's alias? Actually I’m pretty sure that is Mary Jane. She seemed to have no problem lying about her age as a few newspaper articles regarding her shenanigans regarding her dead brother’s will in 1883 said she was in her 30s when she really would have been into her late 40s (maybe she had the looks to pull it off). I want to say she was listed as being younger than she could have been on her death certificate too but will have to check.
