Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - RJNorton - 01-28-2013 08:41 AM http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20130128/PC16/130129301/1268/hunley-legend-altered-by-new-discovery&source=RSS Also http://news.yahoo.com/experts-clues-sinking-confederate-sub-113855343.html RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - LincolnMan - 01-28-2013 10:33 AM Isn't interesting that a discovery like this completing changes the story as we knew it? A little bit unsettling too. As I was once told by a college professor: "try to avoid hardening of the categories!" RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - BettyO - 01-28-2013 12:35 PM Fascinating! Just goes to show that new things are being discovered every day which change how we look at history! RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - RJNorton - 01-29-2013 09:04 AM Several years ago Vicki and I were in Charleston, and we visited the Hunley. A "must see" IMO. I am in awe of the courage it took those men to get into such a small place and go on that mission. RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - LincolnMan - 01-29-2013 09:18 AM Roger: You are so right. I mean the thought of encasing yourself in that thing and going into battle-courage beyond belief. RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - Craig Hipkins - 02-04-2013 09:31 PM I thought that the movie made a few years back was excellent. Craig RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - LincolnMan - 02-05-2013 09:42 AM Craig, I missed that one. There was a movie? Bill, Here is a commercial from 1999. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFYSZqDVvwc Joe RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - Craig Hipkins - 02-05-2013 09:39 PM That's it! RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - RJNorton - 02-06-2013 07:21 AM Vicki and I had a discussion at breakfast this morning. When we visited the Hunley in Charleston years ago I vaguely remember seeing the replica sub on display that Turner made for his movie. I thought it was in the same building that houses the Hunley. Vicki remembers no such thing. Anybody know? ("Seeing things" that don't exist wouldn't be anything new for me.) RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - Tom Emery - 02-06-2013 02:03 PM I agree with the comments on the Hunley movie on TNT; it was a good one. There have also been at least a couple shows on The History Channel in the last decade on the Hunley. One was on the original efforts to raise the ship (in 1995, I think). The Hunley is a story that never really goes away, and I'm glad it doesn't. RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - HerbS - 02-06-2013 02:07 PM Those guys were dedicated for"The Cause".My niece is married to a man on an Atomic Sub.Sailors are larger on the subs of today than then! I had trouble getting thru a WW11-B-24 bomber at 6'225lbs.I wonder what size the Hunley sailors were? RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - HerbS - 02-06-2013 06:35 PM I did some of my own research on the Hunley's crew. They were 8 in number and between 18 and 20yrs of age. But,the most remarkable piece of research was that they were around 6'tall!It was stated that they all doubled up like a doughnut.More to come!!! Thanks! That looks really good. I see actor Sutherlund in a Confederate uniform. Whom does he play? RE: Possible New "Hunley" Explanation - JB Banning - 02-07-2013 08:17 AM Bill, He played Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard who apparently wanted to cancel the mission after the first two crews were drowned in trials. Joe |
