Story of General Wadsworth
General Wadsworth was a very wealthy land owner from Geneseo,NY.His family still owns most of The Genesee Valley.Lincoln put him in charge of the "Sanitary Commision".Wadsworth would try to visit the soldiers hospital every day.One day he came upon a Confederate prisoner who told Wadsworth he was a farmer not a soldier.Wadsworth replied that he was a farmer also,so he let the man go home to Va.Wadsworth then asked Lincoln to be in combat.Wadsworth was killed at the battle of the"Wilderness".He was proped up against a tree where he died.As he was dying,a farmer came out to see him.The farmer was none other than the man Wadsworth released! Then Lincoln got special permission to have Wadsworth's family come and take his remains back to NY for burial!

Great story herb. Wadsworth was also a Division Commander at Gettysburg.

Wonderful human interest story! Thanks so much....stories like these bring a real "personal" feel to the conflict.
