That's what makes professional archaeologists foam at the mouth - I know because I work with two that hate amateurs. They have no idea how much damage they can do. I just turned down Nat Geo Channel last month with their request to film a segment at Surratt House on archaeological digs -- using their "professionals."

I would like to comment on the yellow map above. We have no idea where this came from. There seems to be a name in the lower left-hand corner, and it may begin with Sam. We've shown it on many Booth Tours. Carefully look at all the descriptive notes. This artist appears to have been one of those amateur archaeologists. Look for the site where he found "a spur." Of course it would have to belong to Booth. The Garrett family would never have ridden horses!!!

Joan had given me a copy of that map a while ago. I also appreciated the spur. While it's the best map I have of the property, have wondered about the information and it's just a little too exact. It is really hard to get a good handle on what the lay of the land was like since the topography was altered so much by the expansion of 301.

Today I was down in Culpepper Virginia and went by the Grafitti House at the Brandy Station Battlefield. One of the volunteers was stationed at Ft. A.P. Hill (born in Culpepper) during the 1960's and was sent over to the area of 301 where there was a bulldozer. There was a group there doing an archialogical dig on the place where someone named Wilkes died.

That's pretty good archialogical work with a bulldozer!

Jim. Did you know that the museum in Culpeper is featuring an exhibit on the Spy Frank Stringfellow? That was his home town - in case you get back thst way in the near future.

Laurie. There is an extensive story on Ficklin in "The Evidence". His testimony. It appears that he was a blockade runner, so he JFSdidn't have much time for spying, but he was involved in an assassination attempt on Lincoln in 1861. JFS

It is all I can do to lift The Evidence! We suspect that Ficklin was the person who promised Isaac Surratt an express job in early 1861 that caused him to leave Surrattsville and head west. Many authors have said that Isaac worked for the Pony Express, but he did not.

If I remember correctly Benjamin Franklin Ficklin was from one of the First Families of Virginia, and later purchased Monticello.
