The Plot to Kill John Wilkes Booth
Just received a copy of The Plot to Kill John Wilkes Booth. Flipping through it, I'm not expecting much -- but one never gives up hope.

Also got one called Lincoln's Labels about companies that were around in the Civil War. This one looks good.

Lincoln's Labels is excellent! I can highly recommend it. I bought and used this for a class I had last year and it's very, very good and extemely interesting - enjoy!

RE: The Plot to Kill John Wilkes Booth
If I die of acute indigestion tonight, blame my death on this horrid little book! I read it while eating dinner (yes, it's that short; but I can't tell you how many pages without counting them because the pages are not numbered!). Another strike against self-published books, although this one was supposedly done by Martian Publishing. I do believe martians had something to do with it. Who else would title one of the pieces "A Conspiracy Theorist's Wet Dream!?"

I have just been subjected to conjectures that Stanton was the mastermind behind kidnapping Lincoln; that the act at Ford's Theatre was intended to be a kidnapping; that John Wilkes Booth had to be silenced so that he could not reveal that Stanton was his boss; that Boston Corbett became John Wilkes Booth and traveled to England, India, Mexico, Oklahoma; that Booth's body was identified in 1869 by removing the boot from his left leg and having the foot come with it because of the broken bone; etc.

And, are you ready for this? Henry Rathbone was the real assassin of Lincoln. It all stemmed from a plot hatched in Troy, New York, a town that the author has everyone coming from - right down to Holt. The problem is, only Boston Corbett appears to have fit that bill.

Icing on the cake includes Clara Harris having an affair with both Booth and President Lincoln (thus giving Rathbone a double motive). Even poor Ward Hill Lamon gets a name change and becomes Lamon Ward in this waste of paper.

I'm sorry if I spoiled the plot for you, but the plot spoiled my dinner! Please don't waste your time and money on this little gem.

I guess it wasn't a total waste of my time and money; I did learn two new words from the book: "ulsterette" (Donna and Rick might already know this term) and "persiflage." Your homework assignment for the night is to define both words.

LOL. Mary Lincoln would never allow Mr. Lincoln to have an affair with anyone, much less Clara Harris-and he wouldn't risk her wrath anyway. Smile

RE: The Plot to Kill John Wilkes Booth
I "read" part of the book on Amazon.com but the details of Apr 14 are not in the Amazon excerpt. It seems appropriate it was published by an outfit called Martian Press. I saw the author admitted he had no documentation to support his thesis.

So I suppose Booth arrived at the box all by himself to kidnap Lincoln only to find that Rathbone had already shot him-a feat unnoticed by anyone. If true Booth could have attempted to subdue the assassin and been regarded as the hero of the hour but chose to jump out the box,run off the stage, gallop away on his horse thru the countryside, atypical acts of an innocent man.

This is the first time Stanton has been accused of complicity in the kidnapping plot. Stanton of all people helping the Confederacy? It is just as likely that Stanton hired Booth to give him acting lessons and pointers on how to pick up girls.

The author's name is C Fenway Braxton. You can't make this up.

RE: The Plot to Kill John Wilkes Booth
Rathbone killing Lincoln? This sounds like the conspiracy theory that came out a few years back regarding the Kennedy assassination. Supposedly the driver of Kennedy's limo (secret service agent William Greer) slowed the car, turned around and shot JFK with a pistol! Oh well, it makes for an interesting discussion!

RE: The Plot to Kill John Wilkes Booth
There was an even more outlandish JFK theory espoused by Oswald's mother in the 60's which had JFK and Gov. Connally shooting each other with revolvers from within the limo.

Well, Connally was a Texas shoot em up cowboy-was he not? Oh Lord, the stuff that's out there.

Thanks for the heads up. I was about to pull the trigger on that book. HAH!
