Roger,

I'm not sure they are "in character." I know these guys, and they are just CHARACTERS! But, I love 'em.

RE: Continuation of Surratt Conference Photos
I wish you had been there also, Herb. I also missed Ed Isaacs. There's always next year. I'm awaiting confirmation from the hotel, but I have asked for the weekend of March 14-16. Believe it or not, but I already have three presentations lined up and a list of some good possibilities.

For those of you who are like me - growing old waiting for Terry Alford's definitive biography of JWB to be published, I hate to tell you, but we have to wait another year. His manuscript will not go to the publisher until January of 2014.

If you are on this symposium, then you are a reciptient of Laurie's benevolence. She keeps us going, she's us heading in the right direction, shares her knowledge, directs us to sources, resources, helps us with networking, and most of all, she shares her passion for the subject and her love for all of us.

I totally agree, Jim! We owe a LOT to both Roger and Laurie!

RE: Continuation of Surratt Conference Photos
I thank you all very much. I think I remember saying at the conference that the subject of the Lincoln assassination has been my hobby for over fifty years, and I'm one of the lucky ones who turned my avocation into my vocation. The Surratt Society has given me a multitude of wonderful friends, who have stuck by me through good and bad times - both personal and work-related. Roger and this forum have brought me even more friendships - and three of the best ones have been Roger, Joe, and Linda, who along with Betty, have seen me through a very rough time this past year. I love you guys.

I have known Betty for about 35 years and considered her a dear friend. We have shared many a fun time together with our Surratt Sorority girlfriends. I have corresponded with Roger since about 1996 (but have never met him); I just met Linda for the first time at the 2012 conference; and first laid eyes on Joseph this time last week - even though we had become online friends months ago. I don't want to get maudlin, but Rick Smith, Wild Bill, Wes Harris, Jerry Madonna (who will deny it and swear that I did hit him with my award, which I didn't) have been good friends for years now. And Art Loux, what a guy. I cried when his job sent him far away from the East Coast. And then there's Jim Page, who lives close to Surratt House and brings me cookies and apple turnovers!!!

I could never have known that first night that I joined the new Surratt Society in September of 1975, that I would end up getting my name in credit lines in books, on the front cover of one (not written by me), on a number of film credits -- and hugs from Erik Jendresen and a handshake and compliments on our work from Robert Redford. Color me ecstatic.

Not to put too fine a point on it, Laurie, but -- as this forum is ALL ABOUT details -- I feel obliged to point out that I kissed you, too. <insert grinning emoticon>

RE: Continuation of Surratt Conference Photos
Thank you guys! And Erik, I do remember the kiss - I just didn't want to make the other ladies on this forum jealous!

BTW: Who told you to never insert an emoticon around me??? I truly do hate the things. I think it's because I was a secondary teacher, not an elementary one. Secondary teachers write out their praise, make suggestions, or tell the students what they did wrong. They don't save time by drawing a silly face. Never fear, however, I will tolerate them.

OMG: I hope I didn't just alienate some elementary school teachers. I apologize - "open mouth, insert foot" could be my motto.

I gave the cute little Rebel a smooch, too, Erik! (Wait til her unreconstructed Rebel friends see this!)

Laurie has been a very dear friend as well -- and the adventures we've had with the Surratt Society! We could write a book -- OR a sitcom!!
